COMMERCIAL POOLS
had whoever you turn to. It’s worth bearing in mind that the savings are not as a result of the pool being insulated, they are down to a reduction in heat loss due to evaporation – of about 98%.
That reduction is important as high evaporation leads to greater water top up and the cost of replacing and heating the new water. The more water that is displaced, the more energy required to heat it and therefore the greater the cost. Worse still is that if it is an indoor pool, an effective dehumidifi cation system is essential in controlling humidity within the pool hall and if evaporation rates are high, then it’s got to work even harder, costing even more!
In addition, if evaporation rates are high, chlorine laden water often affects the structure and surfaces of the pool hall building leading to yet more costs due to increased maintenance. The bottom line is, if you have a commercial pool, or any pool for that matter, then cover it as there are savings to be made in a variety of ways.

Any Pool Can Make Savings With A Liquid Pool Cover
There are a number of liquid pool cover options on the market and each enables any swimming pool to reap the unquestionable energy saving benefi ts of a pool cover without any of the aesthetic or practical disadvantages. Heatsavr, is the original liquid cover and was developed by Flexible Solutions of Canada over 16 years ago. It’s a product which is the ideal solution where capital expenditure is limited, where there is limited space for a traditional cover or where the pool shape and water features prevent a manual cover from being installed. Heatsavr is a non-toxic and bio- degradable liquid, which forms a transparent monomolecular layer over the surface of a swimming pool whenever it is calm, trapping water and moisture much in the same way as a traditional pool cover does. However, unlike traditional covers, Heatsavr will reduce evaporation not only at night, but also during the day when bathers are present in the water, albeit to a lesser degree. Because it is always present, it is also well suited to pools which face periods of ‘down time’ during the day, when drawing a traditional cover to reduce vital heat and moisture loss is simply not practical.
Savings of 20% up to 50% are possible, depending on variables pertaining to the operation of the pool. Fully monitored energy savings have exceeded 40% but in any event expected savings should be between four and seven times the cost of the Heatsavr liquid, thus representing an extremely high return on investment.
Implementing the use of Heatsavr shouldn’t require any special budget since the cost of the liquid should be paid for several times over by the achievable savings in each utility bill. The only capital outlay, which is minimal, relates to the installation of an automatic dosing system but even this is normally paid for by the savings on the fi rst utility account.

One obvious downside to many pools is the lack of fl exibility they often offer and the amount of single purpose space they occupy, but that has been changing. Moving swimming pool fl oors vastly increase the versatility of the pool environment and the provision of one opens

sizes and are specifi cally designed for all types of professional competition and recreation leisure centres, hospital and
rehabilitation therapy pools. One of the specifi c
trademarks of a Variopool movable fl oor is its
fl oating system which was
introduced and patented in Holland in 1968. This innovative concept allows a buoyant fl oor to be pulled down hydraulically to its desired depth via a cable and pulley system located under the fl oor, providing fl exibility and maximum safety. The movable fl oors are manufactured from grade 316L stainless steel and synthetic materials that are fully resistant to long term submersion in treated water. The fl oating platform is connected to a hydraulic actuating system pulling on a series of stainless steel cables. The construction and materials are researched and selected with extreme care. They allow high loadings and offer maximum safety and durability. As a result the Variopool movable fl oors have a proven lifespan of more than 20 years. The Variopool movable fl oor is available in three formats: • Stainless steel frame with buoyancy packs and a synthetic panel top deck
• Stainless steel frame with buoyancy packs and a GRP polyester panel top deck
• Large GRP polyester elements with integrated buoyancy.
Maintenance is kept simple as all the hydraulics and electrical components are located outside the pool tank. Service visits need only be done once a year and are performed by a certifi ed Variopool engineer together with a team of certifi ed scuba divers. This can be done in a full pool without having to drain the water out as well as in the evening to eliminate any downtime to the pool.
