NEWS IN BRIEF
‘ONE MORE DROWNING IS STILL ONE TOO MANY’ The latest figures on UK drownings have shown an encouraging decrease, says the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) – the UK’s Drowning Prevention Charity – but one more drowning is still one too many, it warns. The Water Accident and Incident database (WAID) statistics revealed recently that 338 people lost their lives to drowning in 2014, falling from 381 in 2013 and is the lowest figure since records began in 1983.
However, drowning is
preventable and the charity says there is still much work to be done to educate and save lives. RLSS UK’s Chief Executive,
Di Steer, said: “Although it is encouraging that the numbers of accidental water related deaths has reduced - our aim as a charity is to see a year-on-year reduction in drownings –this figure is still, tragically, too high. “We must still continue to educate people in water safety and work tirelessly to equip people with the skills to know how to save a life, whether it be their own, or someone else’s, in an emergency. “We will continue to commit to ensure everyone of all ages can enjoy water safely but know the dangers and act accordingly.”
WATERPARK PLANS REVEALED FOR COVENTRY
Coventry City Council has revealed plans for a £36.7m indoor waterpark and has appointed Faulkner Browns Architects and Water Technology Inc (WTI) to design the development.
The project will include flumes, slides, wave pools, rapids and wet play equipment and is in addition to a leisure centre which will boast a 25m swimming pool and numerous other facilities. Construction on the new complex is set to start in 2017 and should be completed by 2019.

Hough End Leisure Centre Up And Running
The new Hough End Leisure Centre in Manchester opened its doors on 15 June 2015. It replaced old facilities at Withington and Chorlton and includes swimming pools, a gym, squash courts, a sauna and a steam room, a community room and a dance studio. F T Leisure was the principal sub- contractor responsible for the water treatment and filtration systems for the 25-metre, 6-lane main pool and a separate learner pool. Each pool has a dedicated water treatment and filtration system based on traditional medium rate sand filtration with disinfection, pH correction and UV sterilisation.
The client for the Hough End project was Manchester City Council and the main contractor was Laing O' Rourke.
F T Leisure specialises in the provision of innovative products and professional technical services to the commercial, municipal and private swimming pool industries and have worked with Manchester City Council on a
number of projects including the Beswick Community Hub, Wythenshawe Forum and the Manchester Aquatics Centre. They are also currently working with the council on the new Levenshulme Leisure Centre, which is due for completion in autumn 2015.

CPC Expect Full Compliance As Countdown To New Biocide Regulations Begins
As some readers may know, Complete Pool Controls (CPC) is partly owned by leading European Pool and Spa Chemicals distributor Chemoform AG, based in Stuttgart, Germany. Since CPC’s inception in 2007, Chemoform has been helping the Gloucestershire based business supply its customers from its stores in Stuttgart, its warehousing in Rotterdam and through its worldwide contacts. Together both companies have been working hard to bring new solutions to both pool and hot tub users, including Top Tablets (Two- colour), convenient to use sachets and Aquablanc®
.
However, the important relationship has become even more in focus recently as two key developments from the European Chemical Agency (ECHA) now approach. ECHA has stated: 1. ‘From 1 September 2015, a biocidal product consisting of, containing, or generating a relevant substance, cannot be made available on the EU market if the substance supplier or product supplier is not included in the Article 95 list for the product type(s) to which the product belongs.’
2. ‘As specific Biocides products become listed (or annexed) each individual annexed substance, will
require full support toxicological packages to be registered and ECHA approved, to remain on the European market. Already copper sulphate is an annexed product, under this scheme.’ These new regulations could have a major impact on the supply chain and now they are round the corner, there are real demands and pressures that are bringing like minded serious players to consider the necessary investment of both money and time into ensuring compliance, as we move forward. Through working closely with Chemoform, CPC is preparing itself to ensure most of its key Biocide products are supported through both the demands of Article 95 this September, and more crucially through the process of Biocide Product annexation, as and when these become listed. Whilst CPC customers can be assured that the company expects full compliance, they strongly recommend to all in the industry to ensure that their chemical supplier is also preparing to meet these new enforceable Biocide regulations, by supplying appropriately registered product(s).
