Crowdfunding Campaign Launched For Community Pool
The Friends of Perranporth Pool have turned to crowdfunding to bring their heated pool project to life. Organisers are reaching out to the community to raise the remaining £110,000 of the £250,000 they need to upgrade the dilapidated outdoor pool into a heated indoor swimming pool.
The team behind the project, made up of volunteers including teachers, parents and children, are working with sponsors energyshare and local installer Natural Generation, to raise the money needed to install solar panels and two air source heat pumps.
The project, which is expected to benefit over 9,000 people, will enable the pool to be run sustainably, significantly reducing the costs of swimming lessons, effectively passing on the benefits to the local community.
Commenting on the campaign, Rebecca Mathews project co-creator said: “Creation of the pool will bring much needed access to swimming for local people, providing lessons, recreation and fitness and we know crowdfunding can help make this happen. We have had massive community support for this project, demonstrating how much a swimming pool is needed in this area and we believe that the whole community will benefit from this amazing facility.” A recent study showed that only a third of Perranporth’s youth had regular swimming lessons and that 60% of the girls that didn’t have swimming lessons had no participation in any other form of sport. The new facility, which was provided with technical support and advice by Natural Generation, aims to ensure mums with younger children will have somewhere affordable to exercise locally, it is also expected to attract teenagers who don’t currently participate in any sporting activity.
Mark Holmes, energyshare Project Manager said: “It’s great to be able to launch our first project with Natural Generation, which demonstrates what can be accomplished when a community comes together, with the support of local businesses. This is an example of how the hard work of the local community to develop vital facilities for their health and wellbeing can be supported by the income received from the generation of renewable energy for years to come.”

National Pool Plant Operator Courses
When you think about swimming, people like teachers and coaches are the first that spring to mind. What many people don’t think about, is what goes on behind the scenes to make sure that the
water that the public is swimming in is clean and safe and who is responsible for maintaining this.
Pool Plant Operators are the people who are required to test the water and understand what needs to be done to restore the water to ideal conditions. They monitor things like the circulation, disinfection, pH correction, heating and filtration.
The National Pool Plant Operators Courses are a suite of qualifications which are professionally recognised by the Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA), and
8 August 2015 SPN
are ideal in supporting an individual’s personal and professional development within the industry. IoS Training now organises and delivers the full suite of CIMSPA qualifications after entering
into a partnership with CIMSPA and the Institute of Qualified Lifeguards (IQL) in September 2014.
Under the terms of the three-year agreement, CIMSPA will work with both organisations to review and develop the qualifications to ensure their qualifications remain the best in the industry.
Ian Nicks is a trainer and consultant who is a member of the Pool Water Treatment Advisory Group (PWTAG) and has managed swimming pools and sports facilities for 20 years.
He says: “Pool Plant Operator Courses
are aimed at operatives who have any responsibility for operating pools and who need to know how to test water, backwash filters and administer chemicals and why procedures are carried out.
“As an individual, it provides you with all the knowledge mentioned above, which makes you more employable. As an employer, sending your staff on the course shows professionalism and a commitment to ensuring the highest quality training and it helps problem solving should issues arise with the pool water. “It also makes the running of a business more efficient and enhances the confidence of operatives.”
