NEWS IN BRIEF
F T LEISURE APPOINTED FOR BRIDLINGTON Development of a new £25m leisure centre is rapidly taking shape. East Riding Leisure Bridlington will bring together wet and dry sports and leisure activities under one roof and provide accessible health and fitness facilities that can serve the varying needs of local residents and visitors to the town. F T Leisure has been appointed to design, supply and install the water treatment and filtration systems for the 25-metre, six-lane swimming pool, a 13m x 7m learner pool with moveable floor, a freeform pool with water features and two water slides. The facility, which is due for completion in 2016, will include a health suite with a steam room, sauna, spa, showers and foot spa plus other fitness and sports facilities. The building will also have a café with access for both centre users and non-users.
The new leisure centre is being built on the ageing and outdated Leisure World site and has been partly funded by Sport England and the Coastal Community Fund which awarded East Riding of Yorkshire Council £2.1m for the project. The main contractor is BAM.
SWIMMING NUMBERS DOWN IN SPORT ENGLAND SURVEY The number of people engaged in regular physical activity in England fell 1.4% between October 2014 to March 2015 with swimming being the standout casualty. This was despite it being the most popular participation sport in England – with more than 2.5 million adults taking part in 30 minutes of moderate intensity swimming at least once a week. The figures showed 144,200 fewer people taking to pools in the last six months and 390,700 in the last year. The long term trend is even more concerning, with 729,000 people stopping swimming in the last decade.

Huddersfield Leisure Centre Launches
A £36m leisure centre has opened in Huddersfield to replace Huddersfield Sports Centre.
Operated by Kirklees Active Leisure (KAL) on behalf of Kirklees Council, the new Huddersfield Leisure Centre offers a wide range of facilities designed to appeal to all members of the community.
In addition to climbing and other sports facilities, the new centre also has one of the most comprehensive swimming offerings in West Yorkshire with a 25m, eight-lane competition pool; a 20m training pool with moveable floor and a family leisure water facility with a flume, water slide, lazy river and other water features. As the first 25m competition pool in the Kirklees area, the pool will be able to host major regional and even national short course competitions.
Huddersfield Leisure Centre was built by BAM
construction. Designed to be as inclusive as possible, it includes a variety of access to the swimming pools, disabled changing rooms and toilets, hoists located throughout the centre, mobility scooter for ease of access, waterproof wheelchairs and wheelchair-friendly lockers. David Heddon, KAL’s Chair of Trustees, said: “This is an amazing facility that the people of Kirklees will be very proud of for many years to come. It’s an outstanding facility and a clear demonstration of both Kirklees Council’s ambitions to improve the health and wellbeing of local people, while also helping KAL continue to realise our vision of helping more people, become more active, more often.”
The centre has been funded by a combination of cash from the sale of the existing site, funding from KAL and other council funds that would have otherwise been spent on repairs to Huddersfield Sports Centre, which has now closed.
Anniversary SPATEX Gains Momentum!
SPATEX 2016 is attracting ever-wider industry support as the esteemed Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport & Physical Activity (CIMSPA) lends its gravitas and considerable support to the UK’s longest running wet leisure event. With over 75% of exhibition space already sold, the big 20th anniversary SPATEX looks like being an impressive early sell out!
Show Organiser Michele Bridle says: “Yes, we are anticipating a barnstorming industry-wide event. Well over three quarters of space sold in the first four months speaks for itself! We are over-whelmed by the industry’s tremendous backing and I am delighted that we can number the much-respected CIMSPA in our growing list of supporting partners. Aside from our legion of loyal exhibitors, we have received a lot of interest from new sectors allied to the wet leisure industry, which have hitherto not been represented, so we are predicting a large and enriching Exhibition.”
Michele adds: “News on all the exciting new seminars we are currently planning will be released in the autumn, and we strongly predict that this will attract an even broader cross section of visitors than previous years. A big anniversary demands a special SPATEX edition and rest assured it’s in the planning! The Exhibition’s smart rebranding (at the hands of an award winning design agency), with a stunning new website and logo, launched in June, has already received much praise and this is just the first part of our campaign.” SPATEX 2016 takes place Sunday 31 January
to Tuesday 2 February at the Jaguar Exhibition Hall, the Ricoh Arena, Coventry CV6 6GE.
