Around 100 local school children from Radcliffe, Bury, took to the water with a host of Olympic swimmers, including World Champion Mark Foster, on Friday 19 June to celebrate the opening of a brand new pool at Radcliffe Leisure Centre.
The new pool, which is the UK’s first sub £1m, 25m demountable public swimming pool, was the result of a collaboration by Total Swimming and Bury Council and represents a significant investment in the town’s leisure facilities. Total Swimming Managing Director and co-founder Steve Parry, welcomed the excited school children as they took the plunge in the new pool and enjoyed an action-packed morning of aquatic activities. These included mini water polo, synchronised swimming and the chance to race Olympic swimmers including 5x Olympian and World Champion, Mark Foster, Olympic Bronze Medallist, Jo Jackson, 3x Commonwealth Champion, James Goddard as well as members of the London 2012 Waterpolo and Synchro Olympic teams. Steve Parry explained: “Nearly 750,000 people stopped swimming in the last decade and lack of access to facilities clearly plays a role so it is essential that people have access to pools like this one. Together with Bury Council we are bringing swimming back to the heart of the local community and the new pool at Radcliffe Leisure Centre is expected to welcome over 200,000 swimmers over the next three years.
Since 2009, British Gas and the ASA have helped fund 31 pools as part of the British Gas Pools 4 Schools programme. Radcliffe is the final pool of this nationwide initiative which has provided swimming opportunities for over 60,000 people so far.
Jon Glenn, Head of Learn to Swim at the ASA, said: “Learning to swim is the first step to enjoying a host of water-based activities that can help to maintain physical fitness, but it is also an incredibly important skill that can mean the difference between life and death. “We want everyone to be able to swim, which is why the British Gas Pools 4 Schools™ programme has been so important. They have done a fantastic job in providing not only the facility, but also highly qualified teaching staff that have delivered swimming lessons to thousands of children across the country.
“Seeing the
programme develop from a small pool to a full 25 metre swimming complex has been incredible and we’re extremely pleased to be
supporting the event here today at Radcliffe Leisure Centre.” The new pool, operated in conjunction with the existing leisure centre, offers a range of facilities including male and female changing villages with shower, toilets and lockers as well as a spectator viewing area. At 1.2m deep, with four lanes, the pool can accommodate up to 80 people at one time and will not only be used for public swimming and lessons, but will also house school lessons and clubs from the local community who wish to make use of the facilities on offer throughout the day.
