HOT TUB & SWIM SPA NEWS
Essentials From Golden Coast Keeps Customers Coming Back
Hot tubs have seen a surge in popularity in recent years and, in the UK, they’ve become a common sight in gardens. Earlier this year, a 2,000 strong study for TSB Insurance revealed that hot tubs are a feature in up to 1 in 10 homes. New hot tub sales continue to rise, but, according to Golden Coast, having the right choice of accessories and products is key to profiting from this growth.
Golden Coast Managing Director Jamie Adams explains: “The wide range of entry level tubs on the market, combined with growing promotion in the media, means that we are seeing a lot of first-time buyers entering the marketplace. They have made a significant investment, so will be keen to find ways to make their hot tubs easier to look after, cheaper to run and much more enjoyable. “The most successful retailers will be prepared to signpost new owners to the wide range of products available which will make ownership a breeze.”
Establishing and maintaining a good chemical balance is a challenge for every new spa owner. For first-time buyers, there’s the Essentials Spa Starter Pack which offers good value.
Available for chlorine or bromine, it provides day-to-day treatment of spas and hot tubs. Each kit includes: foam remover, two Spa Refresh sachets, 50 InstaTest 5 strips and a water treatment guide. Alongside this, Golden Coast offers a comprehensive range of Essentials Spa Chemicals to meet every eventuality – from raising and lowering pH to clarification, cleaning and scale removers. AccuWeigh, a scoop that measures in both ounces and grams, provides an easy and accurate solution for adding powdered chemicals to a spa. Supplied complete with on/ off and reset buttons, it features an easy-to- read LED display.
The Essentials catalogue offers a wide collection of products which add value to spa ownership: from underwater light shows and cleaners to drinkware and floating bars. According to Golden Coast, the greatest opportunities for growth lie within its ‘Outdoor Living’ collection. Jamie explains: “If you’re looking for the most profitable add-on products, look no further than high-end parasols. Our

£200k Payout In Hot Tub Legionnaires’ Case The family of a Staffordshire man who died
after contracting Legionnaires’ disease from an infected hot tub is among those to share in a £200,000 payout.
Richard Griffin, from Clayton, suffered hallucinations, headaches and fever before collapsing at home in July 2012, and later dying in hospital. Richard, a 64-year-old lorry driver, had contracted the disease from the infected hot tub whilst delivering meat to a café at the JTF Warehouse in Fenton, Stoke-on-Trent. Three people died after the outbreak and a further 14 people became ill.
A report by the Health Protection Agency said the warehouse hot tub was the ‘probable source’ of the outbreak, as it had not been filtered or cleaned for weeks. This caused the water to stagnate, leading to the formation of bacteria and build-up of Legionnaires’ disease droplets.
Inquests into the three deaths are due to be held later this year and the Crown Prosecution Service is considering whether to pursue criminal charges. JFT Warehouse Ltd declined to comment on the settlement.
