Amata Craft Fairs in Jávea, La Nucia and Polop

People complain that it is getting more and more difficult to find really original craft work in the numerous art fairs and medieval markets that are being organised all over Spain these days. The organisers have the cheek to use the words Artesanía (crafts) and Artesanos (craftsmen) to announce what is in fact little more than a normal street market, perhaps with the stall holders dressed in medieval clothes, with a bit of music and a juggler or two thrown in.

Amata is a regional craft association that was started in 1998 and which has stayed true to its philosophy of only admitting original work made by the people setting up a stall in one of its markets. Amata has even registered the words “Artesanía de Autor”, so that the public can be really sure that in Amata markets the author is actually in the stall, and only sells what he makes himself. Amata will be organising three such “Artesanía de Autor” events in July in the province of Alicante. The first one, which is already running, is held on the Sea Front (Paseo Marítimo) of Jávea Port. Some twenty stalls build up every evening at 7 pm and stay open till midnight; this fair is on until the 13th of September, with an ever-changing collection of stalls.

On 10th, 11th and 12th July Amata organises - for the 11th year running - the Medieval Market in the old town centre of La Nucía. This event was originally held to celebrate La Nucia’s 300th birthday and is now a fixed item on the town’s summer agenda. Some 70 stalls will fill the streets between the Town Hall (Ayuntamiento) and the old washhouse near the big car park at the back of the village. A dozen or so musicians and actors will guarantee a lively and authentic atmosphere. Opening times from 6 pm till after midnight.

The weekend after some 25 craft stalls will move to the neighbouring village of Polop. On the weekend of 17th, 18th and 19th July these stalls set up shop on the square in front of the church in the old town centre, at the foot of the hill which you can see from the main road from Benidorm to Callosa and Guadalest, and on which stands the recently restored cemetery and castle. Then on Monday the 20th 15 of these stalls will continue until the 9th of August to show and sell their work in the Plaza de los Chorros, named after the hundreds of “chorros” (waterspouts) that make the village famous. With this fair the Town Hall hopes to attract many people who still don’t know the picturesque old town, which is really worth a visit. Opening times from 7pm until midnight.

The three fairs offer only original work, made with skill, love and lots of patience by the people in the stalls. Three excellent opportunities to get an original piece of craft work, and because you buy directly from the “author”, at very reasonable prices!
