Going Out - Page 47 Interviews with Shadows Benny Davis meets local author Norman MacRitchie Reeley
Norman MacRitchie Reeley’s final book in The ‘Karma Killings’ trilogy ‘The Casino of Atonement,’ is an absolute winner – not to missed. Over the last three years, the author has taken his followers on a mind-blowing dark journey through the treacherous backstreets of 70’s IRA dominated Belfast to inside menacing Basque bomb squads, Amsterdam’s sleazy sex and drug infested ‘Red Light’ district, and probably the most chilling of all, subversive assassination murder squads controlled from squeaky-clean-bowler-hatted-paper-pushing- tea-drinking civil servants in Whitehall. After reviewing his two previous publications, cliff hangers, ‘Malevolent Karma’ and ‘Karma of Revenge,’ this final chapter brings the storyline to an explosive finale on Spain’s Costa Blanca.
I found the content so realistic, I asked the author to come clean on his research methods. Was it today’s cosy internet based armchair mission, or did it include a degree of travelling to selected sites? His reply was totally unexpected.
Not only did Scotsman Norman MacRitchie Reeley personally visit all the regions contained in the book, but regardless of personal safety, his investigative journalism instincts brought him into contact with many menacing shadowy figures still lurking in dark corners of former terrorist and criminal power bases. In Ireland he witnessed the great divide between the Red Hand of Ulster Unionist and Green and white Republican areas, “Marking out, tribal territory with signs of provocation and defiance suggesting I would have to be extremely cautious in my research.” An observation that may have saved him

from serious harm on many occasions including a secret nocturnal meeting with a farmer still living in fear of his life after his UDR cousin was murdered in his barn. He experienced walls of silence and mistrust in many areas and was constantly advised to stop asking questions and quietly walk away, especially in the Creggan Estate, Bogside, Strabane and South Armagh territories.
Similar situations occurred in the Basque country where the author witnessed ETA physical harassment of opposing political parties and foreign intervention. He told me everyone knows who is who in the organisation, but purdah is the key to staying alive. However, after several loosening-tongue whiskies at a reception in a Nationalist bar, he did manage to gather certain essential information. “Nothing definite about who bombed what of course, but general facts about command structure, hit squads and the Kalea Borroka ETA youth wing.”
