Benefits of orthodontic treatment Why bother with orthodontic treatment?

Are you aware of the many benefits of having healthy teeth and properly aligned jaws?

These girls could have a perfect smile….. only after orthodontics.

The first benefit is of course a beautiful smile which can have long-term benefits by improving self confidence in this ever more self aware society. Young children at school can be very sensitive to negative remarks made by

others. This can badly affect their own self confidence in themselves during their growing up years.

Ronaldo, before and after.

Crooked and crowded teeth are hard to clean and maintain. This can result in tooth decay and gum disease and in some cases, ultimately leads to tooth loss. Gum disease and bad breath are associated with bacteria that may cause general health problems in later life.

Having orthodontic treatment is a time when children can learn to care about their teeth and the importance of cleaning and diet and how it can affect their teeth. This will help them to have beautiful teeth for life with probably little need for dental treatment in their future.

These teeth can easily be damaged because they protrude beyond the lips

Malocclusion (poorly lined up jaws) can contribute to abnormal wear of tooth surfaces, excessive stress of the gum tissues, inefficient

chewing function, speech problems, snoring and sleep apnoea. It also causes unfavourable facial profile and aesthetics, which deteriorate with age.

Mouth breathing and snoring can lead to poor performance at school or difficulty concentrating due to poor quality sleep.

Orthopaedic treatment with removable braces can enhance facial growth or correct poor growth patterns in the growing child, so that they more likely develop a most favourable aesthetic facial profile and beautiful smile to go with it.

Ugly and difficult to clean…. gingivitis, gum disease and bad breath are prevalent.

Orthodontic treatment not only corrects the problem at the source, but it can be less costly and much more pleasant than the dental care required to treat the problems resulting from the malocclusion.

Another problem of crowded or crooked teeth is that they tend to get worse as you get older….. many people will have noticed that their once almost straight teeth have started to cross-over and crowd up. The only remedy is to line them up again and fit a retainer. It is never too late for ortho treatment to align the teeth, except for more severe jaw alignment which is mainly effective for a growing child.

In conclusion, it is difficult to put a value on a great smile and healthy teeth that are easy to maintain since it is a lifelong benefit.
