playing an

important role in both the Royal Navy and Royal Air Force history it is surprising that only one company, Fujimi, ever produced a kit in 1:72nd scale of the altered British aircraft.

The FG.1 (F-4K) and FGR.2 (F-4M) mainly differed from their American counterparts by having Rolls Royce Spey turbofan engines, rather than the American GE J79 turbojets, resulting in much larger air intakes and a fatter and more muscular fuselage.

Whilst the Fujimi kits are still

the only ones on the market to date, they are exceptional examples considering they were initially released back in 1987. Featuring beautifully rendered surface details along with finely recessed panel lines, they still stand up to the best of modern examples in kit production, reflecting how fantastic they were when released. The quality is also

reflected in the fact that they present very little problem in construction and need little in the way of additional detail adding.

Many boxings have been

released over the years featuring a plethora of different markings, including most of the retirement ‘special’ schemes. For the last few years the kits had become a little scarce on the market, but recently they have been re-stocked in the UK courtesy of Amerang. Perhaps that Fujimi did such a good job with their kit it has deterred other manufacturers from trying to beat it; either way it is a fantastic and rewarding build of an important cold war British aircraft.

3rd February 1943 – The first production P-51A Mustang flies for the first time. The genesis of the P-51 began in April 1940 when Dutch Kindleberger, president of North American Aviation, bought a new fighter design from Curtiss for $56,000. This evolved over time and six months later, the prototype NA-73 was launched. This first Mustang prototype was designed and rolled out in an astounding 117 days, with first flight on October 26, 1940.
