MARKETPLACE BROTHERS BUILD REPLICA OF GRANDFATHER’S WW1 BRISTOL SCOUT T
wo brothers have set about building a replica of a Bristol Scout fighter that was flown by
their grandfather in World War 1. The project was born after they found some parts of the original aircraft he flew, a control stick, rudder bar and magneto, when clearing out his shed.
David Bremner, from Ludlow,
Shropshire, and his brother Rick, from Tenbury Wells, Worcestershire, began building the replica Bristol Scout in
2010, along with third member of the team, Theo Willford. Their grandfather, Fl Sub Lt "Bunnie" Bremner served with the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) during the Gallipoli campaign in 1915.
The airframe has been built from scratch but the engine was
procured from The Vintage Aviator company, in New Zealand, owned by film director Peter Jackson. So far the project has cost around six figures, but is now nearing completion. The first flight is expected sometime in the spring of 2015 with The Vintage Aviator pilot Gene DeMarco who has over 13,000 hours of experience flying WW1 aircraft. After this, the brothers, who are both pilots, hope to fly from the same airfields their grandfather used and over the Somme battlefield, where another family member was killed.
