PEACEMAKER Convair B-36D showing the

many-faceted appearance of the bare metal surface. A perfect canvas for experiments with Alclad (USAF)

air- brushing some white paint on to it to even the colour out. The decal for the bomb bay doors turned out to be way too long to fit in the space avail- able, so I had to slice about half an inch out of the middle of each of the black rectangles to get an even fit. Blimey, can this thing find anything else to argue with me about? The end is in sight As it happens, yes. I thought

I’d broken its spirit as it trotted in docile fashion towards its fate. The final assembly in- volved the adding of the gun turret on the nose, the props into their nacelles, and the ob- servation bubbles onto the fuselage. But wait, the bubbles are flat bottomed, whereas the fuselage sides onto which they fit are curved! Oh, come on… I solved the problem by

wrapping wet and dry paper around a paint bottle to give a curved sanding surface of simi-

lar radius to the fuselage. Then I had to sand the bottom of each of the bub- bles to a matching curve so that they’d sit snugly against the fuselage. I sealed them around the base with Kristal Klear adhesive to fill in any gaps, and then stood back to admire the fruits of my labours. Then I had to dive in again to remove all the masking from the glazing. It was at this point that the Alclad on the transpar- ent parts decided to leap off, pretty much all in one go. Much swearing, remasking, swearing, airbrushing, swearing and un- masking later, the project was finally finished. I’m rather fond of it. It’s nice

and shiny, looks impressive even in this scale, and attracted the attention of the judges in the 2011 Coventry Model Show, who awarded it Best 1/144 Air- craft. Which was nice…
