Page 67 (Including a little known fact about cruise control) Safety first at Larry’s

At around this time of year, we usually write about the weather changing, the nights drawing in and the relevance of this to your safety through the late autumn and winter. We’re just as surprised that the summer seems never-ending so whilst some of this advice may seem premature, it’s never a bad time to discuss safety.

Let’s start with the obvious: lights, wipers and tyres. In some ways, this is your ‘first line of safety’. We can replace your blown bulbs (saves you graunching your knuckles), polish the glass to see clearer, check your tyres, not only tread but pressure (you’d be surprised how important this is), and of course replace your wiper blades after the summer sun has destroyed them. Every garage should be recommending these checks, and we can’t overstate their importance.

But what about the not so obvious. Are your reflectors actually clean and reflecting? They compliment your lights and make you more conspicuous, especially if you have a dark coloured car! Are your seatbelts working properly, are your mirrors properly adjusted or even cracked? Are your shock absorbers functioning correctly? – if not, you could experience a sudden change in direction when going over bumps in the road, and if it’s wet it’ll lead to a skid.

What about your warning lights, have you been ignoring them… you’d be surprised how many people do. Not only could it be a safety issue, but also an ITV failure! Get them checked out!

Now, here’s an interesting one. Is it safe to use cruise control in the wet? Most people don’t give it any thought, but in fact it can be dangerous. There are reports of people aquaplaning and their car accelerating. What happens is the wheels keep spinning because the cruise control is attempting to maintain continuous power. The only way to stop wheels spinning and maintain control when you aquaplane is to immediately reduce power. The cruise control simply maintains power and by the time you disengage cruise control, it may be too late. Our advice, don’t use cruise control in wet conditions, you can never be too safe!

Regular servicing with a trusted garage is vital. We take safety very seriously and will always go out of our way to advise you on any aspect of safety when it comes to your car. We’ve made no secret of our ‘menu pricing’ which means no nasty surprises when you get your bill. So not only is your car safer with Larry’s, so is your credit card!
