Going Out - Page 54 Cancer Care annual Charity Golf

event. This event took place on the 26th October and was powered

by Campbell Lamont of clgolf.es, whose team did a superb job

managing a final total of 129 golfers. The event was held at Oliva Nova Golf Club and it was so well managed by the caddy master, his staff, and the restaurant staff. Excellent service for all those golfers and their guests. The course was in perfect condition and the weather was superb throughout the competition. During lunch there was a raffle, then after lunch the prize giving, an auction and a fun Irish Auction. Cancer Care Javea are very grateful to all those who organised the day and to all the golfers, their friends and family who so generously joined in the fun and helped raise 2,784.07 Euros! A fabulous day with an amazing amount of money raised for Cancer Care Javea.

Recently volunteers from HELP of Denia & Marina Alta visited the Raquel Payá School for handicapped children in Denia in order to present them with a cheque for 1,000

HELP’s Inspiring Visit to The Raquel Payá School Denia

Euros. They received a very warm welcome and were taken firstly to see the equipment which the donation from HELP had provided. A member of the teaching staff explained how an electric drum set is used while a young student demonstrated it to them. Each drum is related to a colour and with the help of colour charts with varying degrees of difficulty the children are able to beat out different rhythms on the drums. The children enjoy this stimulating activity very much as it enables them to create their own music. They were then shown a variety of clays, putties and Playdoh all of which have different textures. The children are able to manipulate these according to the different needs and they provide stimulation and help with mobility of their hand movements. A dedicated team of physiotherapists provide every child with daily sessions which non pupils from outside the school can also attend. The volunteers were then introduced to the older students who have more advanced capabilities and they were given a demonstration of a new computer which HELP has provided. The class was somewhat depleted as some of the students were in the Czech Republic, together with handicapped children from all over Europe, on an educational and social visit. Taking into consideration the severity of some of their handicaps the students’ achievements are amazing. Using the internet very efficiently they maintain their own blog and keep a diary of their daily activities which their parents are then able to follow on their own home computers. The staff member explained how she puts instructions on their web site for the homework she sets which they can pick up and follow at home. The students in this class also have their own market garden which they maintain themselves. By using the internet they are able to extract useful information which helps them with this activity. Another activity the students are involved in is running a stationery department within the school. They keep a strict record of all stationery materials in the school which involves ordering and receipt of supplies, bookkeeping and accounting. When the staff need anything relating to stationery supplies they go to the group of students in charge of this who then provide them with their needs. One of the volunteers, Catherine Perez-Pinto, was asked by the Headmistress to explain to the students, in Spanish, the role HELP fulfils within the community, which of course she was more than happy to do. If you would like to learn more about HELP’s role please visit their website www.helpdenia.com, visit their Facebook page: Help DAMA or call the HELP office on 966 427 044.

A walk down memory lane for the Poppy Appeal

A truly professional performance from Careline Theatre group had a packed house singing along to old favourites as they transported the audience back to the Great War and Second World War. Fantastic comedy sketches from the old favourites of Dad’s Army and the familiar Black Adder and delightful singing favourite songs of the era and a very saucy rendition of Marlene Deitrich’ Lilly Marlane. Fabulous! Patrick Scully, Branch Chairman welcomed the young performers back on stage and applauded their performance, saying ‘they were the future of the Royal British Legion’. A huge thank you from Benidoleig & District Branch of the Royal British Legion for the donation of 1.250€ boosted by 400€ raffle from a generous public. These amounts go directly to the Poppy Appeal.
