Hair implants

Hair implants started in 1959. Initially they consisted of groups of hair follicles taken from the scalp at the back of the neck and transferred to the frontal areas. Results were good but not very natural looking as very often gave the image of “dolls-hair”.

Since 1980 the technique has improved with the use of mini or micro implants where the implants consist of single hair follicles or in groups of three or four at the most.

First, skin must be taken from the back of the head under local anaesthesia, removing an elliptical piece of some 1.5 x 10cm, enough to obtain around 1000 hairs. This piece is then cut into small slices of about 1 mm wide and once again in smaller pieces resulting in groups of one to four follicles. This is the tiring part of the procedure, usually taking some 90 minutes to two hours during which the patient has a brake and can even eat something to pass the time. Local anaesthesia is then applied over the areas to be treated and the follicles are then inserted one by one by means of a micro-surgical blade. This second part takes another couple of hours after which the scalp is covered with a compressive dressing to be removed three days later. There will be scabs for the following seven to ten days that will fall off on their own and the only treatment will be to apply disinfectant over the area once or twice daily. Initially there can be a growth of all implants but this is only temporary as the hairs often fall leaving the roots that will grow new hairs in the

following weeks. Usually 90% of implants will remain and the result will be visible after six months. Some times after eight months a second session may be required. Hair implants are the only real solution for baldness for both men and women. They are also suitable for the treatment of pubic hair or other areas with scars and burns. The emphasis must always be that the result is natural, in all cases avoiding the accumulation of hairs, and spreading them evenly, making sure that the visible frontal edge of the treated area looks natural.
