Your Healthy Magazine Diet like your life depends on it! Cheat Diabetes.....

We really don’t want to rain on your parade of enjoying this fantastic Spanish lifestyle. However, we DO want to make you aware of a growing phenomenon that can be avoided with a few tweaks to your lifestyle. Diabetes, the “modern epidemic” as it is often referred to, has had a shocking growth rate worldwide and there are mind blowing statistics flooding Google for those of you who are brave enough to face the facts.

The spectre of diabetes is broad and complex, so our focus this month is on Type 2 diabetes which accounts for 85-90% of diabetes cases. Unlike Type 1 diabetes where the body produces no insulin, people with Type 2 diabetes are still able to produce their own insulin. There may not be enough insulin for the body’s needs and/or the cells in the body are resistant to the action of insulin (insulin resistance). Type 2 diabetes is the easiest diabetes one can delay or avoid by adopting some healthier eating and active lifestyle habits. One of the main problems with Type 2 diabetes is that many sufferers will have no symptoms at all! The first indication may be a foot ulcer, vision problems or in some cases even a heart attack. But, before we start to panic, the most important thing we recommend is that you assess your risk of diabetes. We have put together a Special Offer Preventative Medicine package in recognition of World Diabetes Day on 14th November. Your risk assessment includes two specific blood tests, a vibration sensation test and a consultation and analysis with our specialist doctor. All of this at a time to suit you and without a long wait for your appointment at a reduced price of only 37€. It’s the usual list of culprits that can lead to diabetes:- Excess body fat (particularly abdomen), lack of exercise, unbalanced diet, too much alcohol, processed food, smoking. Nothing surprising in the list is there? But don’t be daunted because introducing a few simple changes one by one can really help. And at Clinica Glorieta we are happy to discuss some suggestions that will suit your habits and lifestyle on a one to one basis.

Here are five changes we suggest you make this month to get things started:- 1. Make an appointment with our doctor to determine your risk factor of diabetes 2. Replace processed table salt with sea salt 3. Replace tinned vegetables with fresh or frozen vegetables 4. Don’t eat any fast food takeaway for the month of November (then try for December!) 5. Start training for a marathon (only kidding, but do try to have a decent walk two or three times a week) And a quick word from the Clinic Director Dr. Christoph Meyer-Josten “Ignore your health, and it will go away”.
