Given any discussion about your own death and consequent funeral is the last big taboo, this is a diffi cult subject to address. However, to paraphrase Benjamin Franklin – in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes. So, the only way to present this subject is to be open and practical about the choices we face and please remember, this is not about you.
Your nearest and dearest are the people who will grieve your parting and be faced with the problem of organising and paying for an appropriate and respectful funeral. It is your spouse, your life partner, your children or your friends that have to carry this burden when they are in state of emotional stress.
Given we would like to make it as easy as possible for them, at this time of grief that is exacerbated by our choice to live in Spain, there are plans we should make now and I would like to simply give you an outline of your options.
1. Do nothing – this obviously is the worst case as it will course maximum stress and maximum cost. Your nearest and dearest may have no idea of what to do fi rst or how to organise a funeral in Spain. 2. Leave your body to science – this can cause emotional stress to your nearest and dearest as there will be no funeral conducted as part of the grieving process. Also, the plan can be fundamentally ‘fl awed’ if a post mortem is required or if you die out of the province as it will negate the agreement leading to a requirement for a funeral anyway. 3. Buy funeral insurance – there are a few fl aws here. The plan only works if you keep paying the premiums and only covers you in Spain. Also the cost increases with time, i.e. you could be paying high premiums for many years and eventually pay more, than you would have done, if you had chosen to do nothing in the fi rst place. 4. Buy a pre-paid funeral plan – the benefi ts here are many but a few critical points are. You get a single ‘emergency telephone number’ to call that will initiate implementation of the complete plan. The cost is fi xed at the time of purchase and will never increase, therefore saving money. The plan will work both here in Spain or in the UK if you decide to return ‘home’. The only fl aw is can you afford it?
If you would like to know more about your choices or the details of the Golden Leaves pre-paid funeral plans, obviously I would be only too happy to meet with you privately.
