Marine Harvest Ireland signs major processing deal


MARINE Harvest Ireland (MHI) and Cill Chiaráin Éisc Teor- anta (CCET) have signed a deal to process MHI stock from its Kilkieran Bay site – which has been operating since October 2013 and employs 15 staff – in 2015. The Galway Advertiser reports that the agreement will see €20m worth of MHI’s ‘Irish Organic Salmon Co’ product processed between March and July 2015, of which around 85 per cent will be exported worldwide. The Sales and Processing Director of MHI, Pat Connors, said: ‘Marine Harvest Ireland looks to work with local partners and suppliers where at all possible and we utilise in excess of 600 local suppliers across the country. ‘We are delighted, therefore, to announce this agreement, which will see our fish processed here in Kilkieran, making it a truly local operation. This is a significant investment and if we can bring the stock safely through to harvest in the spring of next year, will represent a major supply line for our global export business.’


Based in Kilkieran and part of the Irish Seafood Produc- ers Group (ISPG) – Ireland’s leading supplier of organically sea-farmed salmon and trout, Cill Chiaráin Éisc Teoranta was founded in 1988 and employs 45 people. MD of Cill Chiaráin Éisc Teoranta, Liam Roche said: ‘This is an important contract for us, with Marine Harvest being a both global name and Ireland’s leading Salmon producer. ‘Moreover, we are very pleased to have this activity taking place in Kilkieran, not just for the staff at our facility, but for the area as a whole.


‘It is our hope that this can be a catalyst for further investment and activity.’

ASSOCIATED Seafoods Ltd (ASL) has appointed Beth Clark as Commercial Manager in a move to further boost business growth. Clark, who has over 20 years’ experience in the seafood industry, will focus on growing ASL’s UK retail sales for value-added shellfish and Scottish smoked salmon. In previous roles, Beth has

SIMON Smith, the man behind the successful development of the Saucy Fish brand, has been appointed the new man- aging director of Icelandic Seachill in Grimsby. Reporting to Magnus Bjarnason, President and CEO of the Reykjavik based Icelandic Group, Si- mon Smith will be leading the £270 million Icelandic Seachill business in the UK, which includes Saucy Fish products. Simon joined the Icelandic Group in 2009 as Sales and Marketing Director, after 15 years at leading businesses including GlaxoSmith- Kline, Diageo, General Mills, Haagen Dazs and Northern Foods’ Fox’s Biscuits.


While at Icelandic Group he has


played a key role in developing the Icelandic Seachill business and tak- ing the lead role in launching The Saucy Fish Co brand. He has also brought together and integrated the commercial functions of the three UK businesses – Seachill, Coldwater and Icelandic UK. Smith said: ‘I know and under- stand the business well having been part of the senior team for five years.


‘I am also very aware of the


strengths and opportunities that being part of Icelandic Group can provide so I’m ready to build on the integration we’ve undertaken and lead the next phase of devel- opment for Icelandic Seachill.’ His achievements include developing the UK customer and consumer strategy taking the business from a manufacturing and trading focus into one that puts consumer and category at the heart of its strategy. In addition to bringing category expertise to the company’s core customer partnerships, Simon also launched The Saucy Fish Co in January 2010, which has quickly established itself as the number one chilled wet fish brand in the UK. Under Simon’s leadership the brand continues to grow and has made its debut in USA, Australia


and Hong Kong in the last 12 months. Magnus Bjarnason, President and CEO of Icelandic Group said: ‘I have had the opportunity to get to know our UK business and many of our people better in recent months.


‘It has also helped me to un- derstand what type of leadership we need to take our business to the next level and I’m convinced that Simon is the right choice. This appointment not only reflects the positive impact that Simon has had on the UK business in recent years, but also underpins the future business strategy of Icelandic Group which is to inspire consumers to consume more fish, from a sustainable source.’ Simon will be based at the Grimsby Headquarters where the company has a workforce of over 1260. Once in post, he will structure a senior leadership team to work alongside him to develop and lead the business. Icelandic Seachill is a key supplier and partner to many of the largest retail chains in the UK providing chilled and coated fish and seafood. The Company holds approxi- mately 15 per cent market share in the retail seafood sales in the UK with strong shares in its key sectors.
