MARINE HARVEST SCOTLAND WINS AN INNOVATION AWARD

COTLAND’s largest farmed salmon producer has won a prestigious industry award for innovation.
Marine Harvest Scotland was honoured at the annual dinner hosted by the Scottish Council for Development and Industry. The Highlands and Islands Enterprise Award for Excellence in Research and Innovation rec- ognised the company’s ongoing commitment to delivering a strong and sustainable industry. It par- ticularly focused on the company’s operations at Lochailort, where salmon farming began in Scotland, which is now home to the recently opened £16m hatchery as well as a feed trial unit.
SUSTAINABLE INDUSTRY Alan Sutherland, Managing Direc- tor of Marine Harvest Scotland, commented: ‘We are delighted that our work in developing this new hatchery as well as our efforts to constantly improve our standards of husbandry are being recognised with this award. ‘We are determined that salmon farming will continue to thrive in Scotland. We need to constantly improve and ensure we maintain the highest standards as we build a long term sustainable industry. ‘It’s particularly heartening to

Director, said: ‘Food and drink is recognised as a key growth sector in the Highlands and Islands and one that continues to make a signifi cant contribution to the region’s economy. ‘Marine Harvest and the wider salmon farming industry supports hundreds of jobs in some of the most fragile communities around our coast. Their efforts to look at new innovative approaches to de- liver long term sustainable growth through investment in their new hatchery and research work is a welcome step and one I hope will reap long term benefi ts.’ Marine Harvest (Scotland) Ltd is the largest salmon farming com- pany in Scotland producing over 48,000 tonnes in 2013. The company has four hatcheries,
four freshwater loch sites and 46 sea farms situated in the Western Isles, Skye, Argyll, Wester Ross and Lochaber. Live fi sh are harvested at Mallaig and processed at the Blar Mhor processing plant in Fort William. In total more than 600 employees are employed at these locations. The new salmon smolt hatchery at Lochailort was opened in 2013 by First Minister Alex Salmond. FF
