Containment – Ocean Tools An intelligent approach to deterring seals O
ceanTools Aquaculture (OTAQ) has developed a new intelligent acoustic deterrent system called SealFENCE designed with the challenging conditions experi- enced on Scottish aquaculture sites in mind.
Managing Director
Chris Hyde formed the company 18 months ago in partnership with 17 year old Aberdeen based underwater technology company OceanTools Ltd. That has given the new company a huge advantage in terms of in house engineering skill and experience. ‘I’ve been working with high tech equipment on marine aquacul- ture sites for almost 20 years so I understand the needs and the challenges’, says Chris. ‘We have designed SealFENCE to address many of these challenges and we are very excited about how it is performing.’ Active Condition Monitor- ing is the intelligent feature on
SealFENCE that lets users confi rm that it is working correctly, 24 hours a day. The system measures the actual sound being produced by each projector and checks it; this also allows the system to warn users well in advance of a potential issue. A wireless link from each unit and software installed on a PC on the barge ensure site manage- ment have both live and historical information about the perfor- mance of the system to hand. SealFENCE’s Individual modules mean that installation is very quick and systems can be expanded or redeployed without modifying ca- bles. The system plugs into existing AC power sockets on the cages so installation is no more complex than plugging in an underwater light. There are no cables required between the cages or between the barge and the cage group – histori- cally a common cause of problems. Testing has been thorough; six months of intensive testing of a

prototype system at Scottish Sea Farms’ Scallastle site proved the system’s physiological approach to be highly effective. And subse- quent customer take up has been strong, with the Scottish Salmon Company installing at their sites at Portree and now Greanamul on Benbecula as well. Chris Hyde added: ‘SealFENCE really comes into its own on sites like Portree with an 80m mooring grid and 120m circles; the compact infrastructure and lack of cables between cages makes a real difference.’ FF

Active Condition Monitoring (ACM)
ACM uses Smart Projectors to provide real time feedback on your SealFENCE system, analysing every aspect of its performance then displaying and logging live and historical information on a local or web connected PC.

Our highly compact, modular infrastructure means SealFENCE is fast to deploy and easy to expand or repair. There are no cables installed between cages.
Proven Technique
SealFENCE uses a proven physiological method of deterrence and a unique Smart projector built for us by Airmar Technology Corp, world leaders in marine transducer technology.
