OA is produced by marine dinofl agellates, such as Dinophysis, and has structural analogues referred to as the dinophysis- toxins (DTXs). The test is compatible with both European Commission (EU) and US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) permitted levels. The test can detect as little as 160ppb of OA toxins in shellfi sh sam-

The main focus of the workshop was a demonstration by Neogen of the latest technology and methods to test for shellfi sh toxins, including the Reveal 2.0 for PSP and, in particular, the DSP hydrolysis extraction. Delegates were keen to see the process in action and to understand how it could be adopted into their test plans. The Neogen team was able to effectively demonstrate that by simply utilising a heat step, and with the addition of two solutions, hydrolysis would allow certain toxins to be detected by the strip, which otherwise wouldn’t be seen. There was acknowledgement by industry personnel that hydrolysis extraction was simple enough to be carried out on location, and many present were keen to adopt it into their own test plans. Commenting on the workshop, Dr Janice McGregor, Neogen Europe’s UK & Ireland Divisional Sales Manager, said: ‘The workshop gave delegates an opportu-

This new shellfi sh toxin test can be used in the fi eld or in a lab and is designed for use by harvesters and processors to test mussels, scallops, oysters, clams and cockles. Toxins that cause PSP can be produced by dinofl aellates of different genera, including Alexandrium and Gymnodini- um; the most researched of these toxins is saxitoxin (STX).
