Shellfish – Neogen Passing the test

SIMPLE AND ACCURATE SHELLFISH TESTING KITS FROM NEOGEN W 54

ith increasing levels of toxins in UK and Irish waters, the effi- cient and accurate detection of both diarrhetic and paralytic shellfish poisoning (DSP and PSP respectively) is an essential aspect of the shellfish industry.

With its European headquarters based in Ayr, and with over 150 em-

ployees, Neogen Europe works alongside industry experts to continually develop its test kits to ensure that they fully meet end-user require- ments. Moreover, unlike many other food safety companies, Neogen also provides full on-site training and ongoing customer support. Neogen is the only commercial company that offers simple to use, on- site lateral flow analysis for the qualitative screening of shellfish for ASP, DSP and PSP. And, coupled with its AccuScan pro reader, which removes subjectivity from reading the lateral flow, these three tests – which are compatible with EU Commission and FDA permitted levels – are unsurpassed. Used by both farmers and the authorities, the testing kits are designed

for use by personnel with an interest in the rapid screening of shellfish samples – such as harvesters and processors – both in the field as well as in the lab. The AccuScan Pro unit is a hand held unit and takes up very

little bench space in a lab environment. Indeed, it is so simple to use it could even be taken out on the boat. Neogen recently demonstrated its testing kits to delegates at a marine biotoxin workshop held at Loch Fyne Oysters Ltd, in Cairdnow. The event brought personnel from some of the biggest shellfish producers in Europe, Local Authority members and representatives of the Food Standards Agency. Attendees enjoyed an overview of the testing and service capabilities for the shellfish and seafood industry, as well as the associated support available.
