MSD Animal Health UK’s ‘PD Monitor’ mapping highlights pancreas disease strain distribution and reinforces the need for vaccination

and Ireland where different SAV subtypes are found. Norvax® Compact PD vaccine has been used successfully to protect fish infected with SAV 1, 2, 4 and 5 in Scotland and Ireland. In many cases tests confirm exposure to virus but without any clinical signs or breakdown indicating effective vaccination. In addition to the feedback
provided by producers during the past 6 months there have been extensive site visits by members of the UK Aquaculture team at MSD including a research placement from The University of Stirling, Elena Wernicke von Siebenthal. The PD Monitor programme led
by Dafydd Morris was established in 2010 to support all producers vaccinating with Norvax® Com- pact PD vaccine. Approximately 76 million doses have been sold since 2008. Over one hundred sites have now adopted elements or all levels of PD Monitor support for their operations. In addition to the value that this brings to individual businesses the collective outputs provide notable benefits to the industry. Dafydd Morris explains: ‘PD
Monitor has now become a sig- nificant collaborative tool and the information coming forward on a continuous basis is allowing both individual producers and groups of producers to plan vaccination strate-
gies with greater confidence.’ Further updates on the latest PD Monitor findings will be presented by MSD Animal Health at Aquacul- ture Europe 2014, Donostia San Se- bastián, Spain October 14-17, 2014.

1. Site assessment In order to implement a successful vaccination programme the whole site and grow on facilities are assessed to understand the potential threat of PD. Parameters reviewed include the specific site and current and historic experience of PD, the local profile including nearby sites, samples from both the site and the grow on stages.
2. Vaccine handling As a standard requirement the company advises all customers on the appropriate and safe use of all vaccines. PD Monitor takes this further by looking at all the critical handling routines prior to vaccination. The priority is to ensure that the vaccine has been stored and handled correctly right up to the point of vaccination.
3. Vaccination The MSD Animal Health technical team is highly experienced in working with producers and vaccination teams. Many farms have individual routines for vaccination. The objective through PD Monitor is to share technical knowledge and to work to develop skills throughout the site team so that the best possible results are achieved through vaccination.
4. Monitoring and Feed back In addition to the farm’s own records and the communication of post vaccinated fish performance, PD Monitor allows for the detailed sampling of blood and tissue to confirm whether or not fish have been ex- posed to salmonid alphavirus in the follow on stages. The feedback from the results provides the necessary information with which to plan subsequent PD control programmes and adapt the vaccination or other production routines in order to help produce healthy and profitable salmon.
