disease in salmon, MSD Animal Health is continuing to monitor the occurrence and distribution of salmonid alaphavirus subtypes in the UK and Ireland. Using results and feedback from a signifi cant percentage of key producers the data is providing an up to date picture of where strains of the virus have been identifi ed as well as confi rming that vaccination programmes are proving effective in protecting salmon from the dis- ease across a large range of sites.

MSD Animal Health UK Technical Manager Dafydd Morris explains the background to the latest data and fi ndings. ‘The most recent data from PD Monitor provides a comprehensive update. We have worked with fi ve key producers across all the production areas covering the majority of farms in the UK and Ireland. Our objective in interpreting the data was to es- tablish which subtypes were being identifi ed, if there was a discernible pattern in their occurrence and importantly if vaccination strat- egies were continuing to prove successful in protecting salmon from PD.’

SUBTYPES AND DISTRIBUTION The latest data has confi rmed that the virus and antibody have both been identifi ed in the recent sampling programme. Approxi- mately a third of farms have been sampled to date with evidence of infection from a third of these. Dafydd Morris confi rms, ‘We will be able to use this data to ascertain risk periods for certain areas, the impact of infections and the benefi ts of a PD vaccination programme.’ PD Monitor recorded subtype positive virus detections in both vaccinated and unvacci- nated fi sh and as a result provided

MSD has sold approximately 76 million

doses of its PD vaccine

a meaningful profi le of the SAV subtype geographical distribution in Scotland and Ireland. This is en- abling the company to interrogate groups of results and understand the progression of the disease in terms of subtypes, instances and frequency. A majority of sites were PCR blood tested monthly as a matter of course in addition to fi sh health being monitored continually.

EFFECTIVENESS OF VACCINATION The latest PD Monitor report

confi rms that fi sh have been vac- cinated in all regions of Scotland
