Seals of disapproval

eever possible; the undertaking of reporting with the completion of an appropriate form. The issue of fi sh farmers shoot- ing seals has generated a tremen- dous amount of heated debate and has led to a number of violent clashes between fi sh farm workers and seal activists. Which is all extra fuel to add to the fi re of the anti-fi sh farmers.

A Salmon, Aquaculture and Seals

Working Group has now been set up to research alternative non-lethal measures to deter seals from harming the salmon, such as tougher nets, tensioning and acoustic devises. Members of the group include Sainsbury’s, Freedom Food, the RSPCA, the Sea Mammal Research Unit, International Animal Rescue and Marine Harvest, who

will all work together with the Seal Protection Action Group. The use of humane deterrents

must surely be the way forward for predator control. Not only does it avoid the need to kill seals, which also avoids confrontation and negative publicity, these types of solutions are, in the long run, a lot more effi cient and cost effective. FF

Clockwise from left: Seals can decimate farmed fish populations; the damage done to nets by predators can lead to escapes
