Things are looking Rosie

the job was that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with all the audits – and we are audited a lot. As well as all of the animal health audits, we were recently chosen when GlobalGAP were themselves audited. And whilst it has taken a lot of hard work setting up all of the systems involved in the auditing process, it’s now just bread and butter keeping on top of things – we’re doing everything right, and everyone can see that the fish are healthy – we have nothing to hide.

What changes have you seen at Camus Glas over the years?

The first major change has been with the issue of seals. Two cycles ago we had a real problem, and seals were wiping our pens out. But we invested in an Airmar seal deterrent system, so the seals are still there, but now they don’t go anywhere near the pens. The second big change has been the introduc- tion of wrasse, which has seen the virtual elimination of sea lice across the three sites on Loch Sunart. This cycle we’ve only had one treatment, whereas previously there would be dozens of treatments per cycle. It’s an incredible story. And, because of that, everyone is upbeat. Where before there was

a lot of doom and gloom there is confidence, and because the company is in such a fantastic position everyone is wearing their Marine Harvest logos with pride.

Is there any rivalry amongst the three sites on Loch Sunart? Everyone would say no, but of course you want to be the site with the best FCR on the loch, and it looks like this year Camus Glas is going to have its best FCR ever, and one of its best yields. But at the end of the day we’re all in it for the same thing, to produce the best quality salmon, and Loch Sunart salmon is fan- tastic. I have friends down in London emailing me saying they’ve just bought my salmon, and that’s what you want.

What do you do when you’re not fish farming?

I am the local fire team watch manager, as

well as deputy station officer in the local coastguard and a member of the communi- ty council. I also have three kids, and a very understanding husband who stays at home, which is great. And, yes, I also love eating salmon. I prefer smoked salmon, but I’m never sick of it. FF
