and the Delaware County Department of Veterans. The bureau works closely with their staff and members to mount meet- ings, special events and reunions. A suc- cessful fundraiser dubbed “Suitcases for Soldiers”resulted in gymbags stuffed with products being shipped to military bases in the
U.S.and overseas.
The religious arm of the SMERF market benefits from the expertise of Delaware County's Brandywine Country CVB, too. The bureau is working with the group Catholic Business Professionals of Greater Philadelphia, its employees andmembers. “As everyone knows,we hope to have the Pope here next year,” glows Milligan. “We are reaching out to people throughout the world with information about where to stay and eat and what to do while here.”
Fiore adds a promotional message. “A well-run marketing campaign directed to Catholic families asks people who are planning to visit the area during this mon- umental occasion if it is less expensive to stay in Delaware County than it is to stay in Philadelphia. To which we answer: Is the Pope Catholic?”
This dynamic duo bubbles forth with a passion that is contagious and inspiring. Enthusiasm is evident when they discuss the Army - Navy soccer games held annu- ally at PPL Park in Chester. “The sporting event is nothing short of wonderful,” exclaims Milligan. “It has flourished into an alumni weekend with one dinner for each team. We urge readers to attend the game this coming November.”
Concluding,Milligan sums up the role of Delaware County's Brandywine Country CVB in the mix of meetings and events of these markets. “Our job is to assist associ- ations and SMERF organizations in mak- ing logical decisions concerning where to stay and eat and what to do during their time in Brandywine Country. Do we actively solicit this business? No. Do we, instead, work as facilitators? Yes. A resounding yes.”
