Gettysburg president. “We aren’t ignoring that as a key attraction for visitors to travel here, but we are placing a greater empha- sis on experiences taking them into unchartered areas of the town and county. These new experiences will inevitably extend…stays by offering a wider array of opportunities.”


In concert with a new look is the tagline: “… and you thought we were just history.” With a focus on all things beyond the Civil War, this is a town to be noticed by associ- ations and SMERF groups.


“In the past couple of years,we have gone to many trade shows to attract meeting reunion planners, state associations and medical memberships,” says Stacey Fox, Destination Gettysburg vice president of sales and marketing. “This month we are hosting the PA State Association of County Controllers. The five-day event promises members a wealth of water cooler talk to take home. Opening dinner guests will be joined by Abraham Lincoln, marvelously portrayed by James Getty. The Gettysburg Big Band will perform during closing fes- tivities. In between, there will be a dinner and wine tasting at Hickory Bridge Farm.”


Fox reveals that her favorite activity planned for the controllers is a tour and meal at the Eisenhower National historic Site, the only home President Eisenhower and his wife Mamie owned together. “They will dine on Ike’s preferred picnic foods and test golf skills on his personal putting green. The former president called our town home twice. The first time was when he and Mamie stayed here while he led tank training prior to deployment inWorld War I. They resided here again in 1950 after purchasing the farm adjacent to the battle- field. Even during his time in office, the couple spent time at the farm where they entertained world leaders and family members.”


Fox stresses that Gettysburg is a place, not just a place in time. “Associations and SMERF groups are tantalized by our vibrant downtown, award-winning golf courses and many meeting venues. We have amazing boutiques, a growing wine interest, and a wealth of arts and cultural sites and activities. There is wonderful
