“ARS (audience response system) is a very popular technology these days,” he notes. “People are utilizing it in many different ways. These systems are interactive and provide real time opportunities to engage with one’s audience, allowing the organiz- er to conduct surveys of their audience during the actual event - as it is happening. This allows for capturing the audience’s actual experience over the course of the day. Surveys can be conducted after the keynote, before the morning break, or immediately before or after the group goes to lunch.”

Cataldi, “to obtain specific data from the audience, and to have the results of that feedback made immediately available to the planner.”


Moving beyond just basic ARS, Cataldi also is seeing planners allowing for text responses from their audience, and ques- tions asked to presenters via handheld technology.

“Mobile apps are a really underutilized tool when it comes to technology,” notes Cataldi. “I’m not sure that people even real- ize how accessible they are. Planners can use them to build personal agendas. They also can use them to provide directions to attendees - right on their phones! These apps reduce the need for things like digital signage and they alleviate the need for a lot of the registration staffing, because many guests can register by using such apps on their mobile devices. We don’t develop mobile apps at IMS, but we can point planners in the direction of apps that are out there to help them as they plan their events.”
