ARTISTIC VISION


Jean Nouvel and Yann Kersale have a long history of collaboration, driven by a shared vision that buildings should be able to express themselves as sculptural pieces beyond the essentials of efficiency and functionality. For the Burj Doha, the process of creating a lighting scheme was interwoven with the building’s concept, its nighttime identity considered just as imporatant as its statu- esque daytime presence. Kersale’s proposal called for the entire length of the tower to become a shimmer- ing surface of molten gold and silver, gradu- ally morphing from one ‘metalic’ hue to the other. Whilst the intitial plans called for more muted shades, the client ultimately opted for a stronger interpretation of the palette.

with one cool white (6000K) and two amber (590nm) high-current LEDs. The LEDs are mounted on an alucore board, which is con- nected to the housing to guarantee a per- fect active thermal management designed for longevity. In addition to this, the PCB includes a micro controller based tempera- ture monitoring device that transfers the actual board temperature back to the main control system in order to avoid over-heat- ing of a fixture. This means the luminaire is self-secured against temperature damage. A high-specific optical system with tri layered lens combination on each chamber guarantees a perfect light output. The first lens mixes the different colours of the LEDs to one single light output. The second lens adjusts the light strands parallel. The third optic defines the beam angle. All together they give the luminaire a very homogenous light output with artifact-free display of mixed colours and an excellent glare suppression, essential as the fittings were located at the base of full height glazing. Das Burj Doha wurde durch Atelier Jean Nouvel ent- worfen und gehört zu den neuesten Ergänzungen der Skyline von Katars Hauptstadt. Der Turm ist mit einer durchgehenden Gitterkonstruktion aus Stahl bedeckt, die Mimics, einen traditionellen marokkanischen Schirm, nachahmt und diesen benutzt, um die Aus- wirkungen der intensiven Sonnenbestrahlung der Region abzuschwächen – sowie Sommertemperaturen von mehr als 50oC. Nouvel wandte sich an seinen alten Freund und langjährigen Mitarbeiter Yann Kersale für die Ausar- beitung eines passenden Beleuchtungskonzepts. Ker- sale entwarf ein dynamisches Design, das zwischen ‘Gold’ und ‘Silber’ dahinrieselt. Seine Vorstellung sah so aus, dass hinter der Gitterbekleidung des Turms beleuchtet wird, um ihm die Qualität eines Edelsteins zu verleihen. Jon Estell von Insta UK wurde eingeschaltet, um kun-

UNIVERS, an IP addressable control system, was used to operate the entire scheme. With initial programming carried out on a computer and downloaded to powerful mas- ter units, the system can stand alone, with different modes and scenes selected via a simple user control panel. IP addressing allows the user to remotely access the system to update programming, check temperature TC points of the LED PCB of every luminaire on the project, and for Insta to provide remote support beyond their weeklong sign-off on the installation. Within minutes of the switch-on in March 2012, ripples of excitement were spreading across social media, with photos, videos and comments saluting the scheme. Kersale ha concepito un progetto dinamico che potesse fluttuare tra il “do- rato” e “l’argento”, con l’intenzione di illuminare il rivestimento del traliccio della torre e dargli un effetto di tipo “gioiello”. Jon Estell di Insta UK ha contribuito invece con la fornitura di luci al LED capaci di sopportare alte temperature di circa 45-50 gradi centigradi tra il rivestimento e il vetro al fine di illuminare un’area di circa 2 metri di larghezza per 3 metri di altezza ad una portata davvero stretta. Sono state scelte in media 82 posizioni di luci al LED per ognuno dei 44 piani disponibili.

Diseñado por Atelier Jean Nouvel, el Burj Doha se en- cuentra entre las nuevas incorporaciones del paisaje urbano de la capital de Qatar. La torre está cubierta en un continuo entramado de acero que imita una


tradicional celosía. El entramado es utilizado para mitigar los efectos de la intensa luz solar de la región- y las temperaturas de verano que exceden los 50oC. Nouvel convocó a su viejo amigo y colaborador de años, Yann Kersale, para desarrollar un proyecto de iluminación apropiado. Kersale concibió un diseño dinámico que ondularía entre dorado y plateado. Su visión fue iluminar detrás del revestimiento de entra- mado de la torre para darle una calidad semejante a la de una joya. Jon Estell de Insta UK fue convocado para suministrar luminarias de LED personalizadas capaces de resistir las intensas temperaturas de entre 45 y 50 grados y adecuadas para la ubicación de frente al mar. Cada planta tiene una pasarela angosta de metal entre el revestimiento y el vidrio. Es aquí donde se ubicaron las luminarias, iluminando un área de aproximada- mente 2 metros de ancho por 3 metros de altura a una distancia relativamente corta. Se propusieron un promedio de 82 posiciones de luminarias para cada uno de los 44 pisos.
