A hospital in the Pennsylvanian state capital Harrisburg has become the first building in the city to be lit by LED fixtures.
Located by the Susquehanna River in Harrisburg Pennsylvania, the PinnacleHealth centre wanted to create a noteworthy presence in the historic area it calls home. The building’s new design is historic in itself as it is the first building within Pennsylvania’s capital to be lit using LED technology, allowing the building to stake out its claim on the Harrisburg skyline. While incorporating this into the renovation of their emergency department, the design presented envisioned illuminating the building as if it were a lantern on the river, glowing and changing its tones of light to suit the season, all while complimenting the outdoor environment. At the same time the design of the health centre had to suit its crucial purpose, ensuring patients well-being and privacy is catered for, while engaging with the public and visitors who use and live near by the building. To create this desired environment the Traxon Graze (Liner) XB Dynamic White was chosen to create the facade, illuminating the lower section of the building entirely with a curtain of white light. These fixtures proved
ideal for the design offering the necessary control and programming capabilities to allow the installation to be illuminated just before dusk and begin to glow as daylight fades into evening. The LED fixtures provided the longevity, needed in this particular case as the light boxes which form the curtain wall system are not easy to access for repairs to be made. The Dynamic White fixture allows colour changes from cool white to warm white as the seasons change, creating a calming atmosphere as the year goes on.

Toshiba has stepped in to help with the upkeep of a regal monument to British military history, The Brompton Barracks.
Brompton Barracks, founded in 1812 in Chatham, Kent, is home to the Royal School of Military Engineering, created to ensure that British soldiers were properly trained to deal with engineering challenges. The Officers’ Mess at the Barracks is a regal building, and in keeping with its prestigious military history, is illuminated inside by large chandeliers and opulent wall lamps. Previously, the Grade II listed Mess interior had been lit by incandescent candle bulbs, however, these old lamps frequently failed and had to be changed, an exhausting and disruptive process. A more durable, energy- efficient lighting solution was needed and it was decided to make the move to LED. Having requested samples from Toshiba, a successful four week trial took place, during which the LED bulbs proved more than equal to the task of providing the high quality light needed to illuminate the
building’s grand interior. Following the trial, all of the lamps along the walls and in the chandeliers were replaced within three days. The Mess’s 25W incandescent lamps were replaced cutting energy consumption by 75 per cent. Toshiba’s LED lamps last up to 20 times longer than their incandescent counterparts, meaning that the amount of time and money that will be spent on replacing lamps will also be drastically reduced. Overall, it is expected that the installation will save the Ministry of Defence £29,000 over three
years.The Barrack’s maintenance team were so impressed with the new lighting that LEDs have now been installed in the Mess conservatory and there are also plans to upgrade the building’s office and classroom lighting.
