130 DECORATIVE & DESIGN / PRODUCT
Dutch Design Week
EINDHOVEN , NETHERLANDS OCT 20 – 28 2012
Experimental design played a promi- nent role in the eleventh edition of Dutch Design Week. This year the most striking trends were co-creation and sustainability. By collaborating in col- lectives, many designers were able to hold successful events, often actively involving visitors in the process. Among the highlights was ‘Materials XL: Licht’, a day of lectures on the theme of Light. Six keynote speakers - including Rudolf Teunissen (creator of the award-win- ning Broken Light project) and designer Daan Roosegaarde - delivered inspira- tional presentations focusing on their work with light.

Heliodiscus Paula Arntzen
Inspired by the 1904 book ‘Kunstfor- men der Natur’ by German biologist and philosopher Ernst Haeckel, Arntzen uses strips of transparent Polypropylene to recreate the symmetry of plant life. The collection is an extension of an installation Arntzen designed for the atrium in Modez design hotel, Duiven.

Trace Light Transnatural
Trace Light uses photoluminescent pigments in combination with poly- urethane rubbers, poured onto the shade to create a patchwork of colours that glow with energy stored earlier in the day. The Trace S and Trace M, are charged either by the provided 5W LED light bulb or natural solar energy.

Expanding Lamp Erik Stehmann
“Forget the rules, make your own rules,” says Erik Stehmann of his designs. Expanding Lamp is proof of his playfulness. Inspired by the Hoberman sphere, it comprises hundreds of con- nections and hinges made of oakwood, allowing it to collapse into a desk-lamp, or expand to become a floorlamp.

Fonckel Fonckel One
This new brand presented its first model, the ‘Fonckel One’, an interac- tive designer lamp, developed and pro- duced exclusively in the Netherlands. Easily and intuitively controlled - the direction, intensity and breadth of the bundle of rays are regulated by a sim- ple, iPad-style movement on the lamp’s touch-sensitive frame – the Fonckel One can be quickly adjust it to suit the needs of the user.
