THE BRIDGE AT SOUTHWARK


The bridges over the Thames in London are, by and large, not pretty, and have a long and lurid history of crumbling, burning and swaying their way into British folklore. It is arguable though that in 2012 central London’s river crossings have never looked better after a number of them were given individual lighting designs in time for the Olympic Games. As part of these new permanent installations, Southwark and Blackfriars bridges have been lit with stunning colour change effects, designed by Neil Arnold, John Burke and Marlon Edwards. LEDs from Aquila brought a splash of colour to London’s weather beaten river crossings in time for an unprecedented year of celebration.


London Authority and based on a design by the City of London’s lighting and engineering department, the two bridges are bathed in two colours at a time which gradually change, the hue moving from side to side across the ornate metalwork. In order to synchronise with the other downstream bridges at each hour the landmarks, which include Waterloo, Golden Jubilee, Millennium and London Bridges, move to a single solid shade. Neil Arnold, lighting engineer with the City of London, tested numerous floodlights for the job and found that for these particular


crossings the Aquila Neos 2 LED floodlight was the only single unit product with the size and distribution to achieve the solid colour required. Aquila provided the Neos 2 LED already wired with power and data cables in order to simplify installation. Since completion the light design has been well received with the Mayor of London Boris Johnson singling it out for praise in speeches.


Some of the famous Southbank landmarks which run alongside the river, such as the Tate Modern, HMS Belfast, the Globe Theatre and the OXO Tower have also had their lighting designs redeveloped to coordinate with the Thames bridges. The river took centre stage earlier in the year when a pageant was held on the Thames to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, and during the summer the Olympic torch was sailed up the river into the Olympic Stadium, at night, showcasing the bridge’s new lighting to the world. www.aquiladesign.co.uk
