IALD Honours 2012

As a fundamental annual touchstone for members of the IALD, Enlighten Americas is an important opportunity for the association to recognise special volunteers and contributors to its success.

375 lighting designers descended on Vancouver for this year’s IALD Enlighten Americas event. Over the course of two days, attendees had a choice of fifteen breakout educational sessions in three tracks: Art, Science and Professional Tools.

The IALD inducted four members to the IALD College of Fellows. The IALD Fellows designation is awarded to members of the IALD for valuable contribution to the art and science of lighting design, and for their continued service to the IALD. Fellows are professional members with a minimum of ten years of experience. The following Fellows were formally inducted at Enlighten Americas 2012:

STEFAN GRAF, FIALD Illuminart Ypsilanti, Michigan USA

BARBARA HORTON, FIALD Horton Lees Brogden Lighting Design New York City, New York USA

schedule of events. Attendees leveraged morning table topics during breakfasts to discuss some of the most pressing issues impacting architectural lighting design. Members of IALD Pacific Northwest presented a poster session on the design considerations of the region, and the closing session, ‘Speaking of Light’, featured brief presentations from volunteer speakers in a Pecha Kucha format. Lighting designers at the conference also leveraged social media to network with other attendees, as well as other designers worldwide following the #IALD and #Enlighten12 tags on Twitter. Contributing to the strong turnout in Vancouver, fifteen Lighting Industry Resource Council (LIRC)-member companies supported the participation of 42 early- career designers to Vancouver as part of its Emerging Lighting Design Professionals Initiative. The LIRC developed the initiative to financially support designers within their first five years of on-the-job practice to attend IALD Enlighten Americas, recognising that financial and budgetary constraints may make it difficult for a lighting design practice to support the continuing education necessary for training its junior staff.

Attendance at IALD Enlighten Americas was further bolstered by its student participants, many of whom received support from the IALD Education Trust to attend. The 25 students kicked off

their conference experience on Thursday afternoon with LightPlay, a lighting design charette in which students are challenged by leading designers and educators. This year, the students’ task was to build a light fixture based on any genre of music. Urban, tribal, flamenco, rap and jazz influenced the resulting fixtures, which were presented at the Thursday evening President’s Opening Reception, sponsored by Cooper Lighting. Guests at the reception purchased tickets to vote for their favourite fixture, and a small team of judges provided a panel opinion. This year, the judges and the audience agreed on a favourite, ‘Rap-sody of Light’, a project that reminded the judges of Billie Holiday. Boasting the loose organization of a jazz composition, the fixture utilised an exciting anachronistic mixture of an old-school reflector with new, colourful LED technology. Ticket sales raised more than $1,000 USD for the IALD Education Trust. Every year, attendees cite unique networking events as one of the highlights of IALD Enlighten Americas. Thanks in large part to its evening event sponsors, 2012 was no exception. Evening events sponsored by Philips Ledalite, Cooper Lighting, Acuity Brands and Philips Lightolier lit up the Vancouver nights for attendees. IALD Enlighten Americas 2013 will take place on 3-5 October in Montreal, QC Canada. www.iald.org
