152 TECHNOLOGY / LED CASE STUDY
BRINGING IT BACK HOME
Exterior wallwashers and ChannelTubes from d-led Technologies help to make Maccabi Netanya’s new home football ground in central Israel a shining example of a country on the rise.
The sparkling football stadium on the outskirts of the central Israeli city of Netanya is the new home ground to Maccabi Netanya F.C. one of the country’s oldest top tier teams. After it was decided that it was impossible to extend their previous stadium in the centre of the city due to space constraints, the new venue opened at the start of November following seven years of construction, a capacity crowd witnessing the team beat Hapoel Tel Aviv. Costing nearly $60 million to build, the new venue triples the capacity of its predecessor and next year the stadium will host numerous games of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship. Designed by GAB architects, one of Israel’s leading practices for sporting venues, the Netanya features two grand arches, which support the roof of the two main stands and bring to mind London’s Wembley Stadium in
their appearance. Fittingly, given the central role the sports complex will play within the city, the stadium has been decoratively illuminated with 17,000 LEDs, so the structure always catches the eye at night. The stadium boasts many impressive architectural features and d-led was chosen to deliver all of the lighting effects, furnishing the new stadium with 462 d-led’s D-WASH36 LED wall washers and 90 controller drivers. The effect lighting designer Kobi Rosental from Teichman & co. chose a special combination of LED colour fixtures for the different areas of the stadium. 216 D-WASH36 RGB (Red-Green- Blue) with 6° lenses were used to illuminate the top of the roof construction, while 144 D-WASH36 AGB (Amber-Green-Blue) with 15°/25° lenses were used on the steel struts which support the roof. 38 D-WASH36 AGB (Amber-Green-Blue) with oval lenses
illuminate the edge of the roof, while 64 D- WASH36 WW (Warm White) with 25° lenses are used to light the black ticket towers, which stand rather ominously around the structure. 19 d-led ChannelTubes 1100mm long in natural white with oval lenses illuminate the yellow walls of the stadium and all the fixtures are connected to d- led’s DR-SD control drivers which allow the flexibility needed in driving high brightness LEDs.
The lighting design adds vibrancy to the structure, the colour bringing a refreshing change to the white steel stadium roof, which can vary its look at the touch of a button, bringing a sense of occasion to an arena which will no doubt see its fair share of sporting drama.
