Fears of a poor turnout due to the dire forecast at the start of the week proved unfounded and the Torbay and District Riding Clubs end of season show was blessed with sunshine. Reports Jay Ward.

The event held at the Mare and Foal Sanctuary’s Coombe Park Indoor Arena at Totnes, featured classes for in hand and ridden equines of all shapes and sizes. Judge Mrs Jean Waldron had also very generously supplied sashes for all the champions which were greatly appreciated by not only the club, but those lucky enough to win them.

The in hand classes were the best supported section with 12 forward in some classes, In hand Champion was Emma Murch’s Welsh Section D yearling Gwynfaes Llywelyn, with reserve going to Helen Edworthy’s Part Bred Arab Song of the Stars.

Following on from the in hand classes were the ridden sections which were divided in to age groups with the championships being run on a points system.

The lead rein section was also busy. The youngest rider in this section was 3 year old Sophie Ward-Wills who rode her charismatic Shetland Lotuspoint Wibble Wobble this partnership being placed in all three of their classes.

Champion in this section was Katie Banbsey riding Jampot with reserve going to Emily Knight riding Carylmai Patience.

Katie’s sister Jessica Sleight riding Finn was not to be out done as she clinched the junior championship with 5 year old Brooke Lawrence riding Cariad competing for the first time off the lead rein standing reserve. The Champion in the 13 to 17 year age group was Shilstone Rocks Snow Flurry ridden superbly by Alice Wiseman.

The final championship of the day went to Sue Edwards riding Granddad’s Mistress, reserve champion was Debra Murch riding the smart Welsh Section C gelding Arthen Hedd, this was a bittersweet win as the gelding is now off home to his owners having had a super couple of years with Debbie who’s wins with the lovely gelding have included NPS silver medal and Royal Cornwall amongst others.
