Taunton Vale Foxhounds Hunter Trial October at Higher

Ruggin Farm West Buckland. Due to the appalling summer weather TVFH had to cancel both the BE events they had planned, but with a small pocket of fine weather and a lot of last minute work Dominic set up an excellent course for The Taunton Vale Hunter Trial.

Dominic Moore from Jump 1 Events managed, at long last, to get his well designed cross- country course into use on Sunday 7th

The Taunton Vale Foxhounds Hunt events’ organiser Poey Vacher saw the opportunity to use this Jump 1 course; by kind permission of the land owner Richard Smith, to raise much needed funds for the hunt. With the extraordinary weather this was a risk for all parties as the land was only just dry enough to work on and the forecast for the weekend diabolical – indeed, no other local event managed to run. However, with good team work and plenty of determination the course was set and nearly 200 riders enjoyed all 4 courses in autumn sunshine.

Dominic modified his three British Eventing courses of 80cm, 90cm and 1m to provide well built fences with challenges and easier options for all to enjoy. Local rider Sophie Walker took 1st place in the Open Novice whilst Olivia Morgan won the restricted Novice. 1st in the Pairs class were Charlie Finney and Amanda Brown. Megan Green took the Restricted Intermediate with Polly Gundry taking the Open section on one of her 5 horses competing. The winner of the 100cm Open was Toby Coble with Lucy Hastings taking the prize for the best Taunton Vale Foxhounds Hunt member. There was also a very popular separate Mini course designed at 40cm – 60cm for the Under 14s. This included leading rein, pairs and a Horse and Hound class.

Gail Berry the entries secretary had a great team who all worked hard whilst her husband Tony, and Alison Brown (ex Masters) helped steward and assist with the scoring.

Chris Salisbury ran control and there was a well needed ‘Tractor Towing In/Out Team’ in the lorry park who worked hard all day and kept stuck drivers entertained! Fitting Autumn Refreshments were provided by the Hunt Supporters Club whilst ‘Sasha’s Cider Punch proved a ‘real hit’. This hunter trial could not run without the hard work from Vicky Plume in setting up the event. Sadly, she had to cancel her Unaffiliated ODE planned for the next week end due to yet more heavy rain.

This was the first Hunter Trial the Taunton Vale Fox Hounds has run for many years and they will certainly look at making this at least an annual event. Meanwhile Dominic Moore and 1 Jump has other course designing to do and we hope there will be plenty of support for his BE event next year.
