The BRC Area 18 Novice Indoor showjumping qualifier was again held at the lovely Kings Equestrian Centre on Sunday 14th October reports Kelly Clack.

Charm, Megan Slater riding Jess, Tilly Milton riding Golly and Georgie Toole riding Kissemmie Midnight Magic won the junior section and qualified for the championships in March 2013. The individual junior winner was the speedy Molly Strong riding Beaulieu from West Oxfordshire who beat off the competition by just over 6 seconds with a double clear!

The Seniors

This event is open to junior and senior teams of 4 from Riding Clubs within the BRC Area 18. The winning junior and winning senior team qualifies for the BRC National Championships at Hartpury in March 2013. The competition consists of two rounds with any teams tying on first place then go forward for a third jump off round, otherwise placings are decided on the second round time. The best 3 scores from each round count.

There were not as many teams entered this year as in previous years but still a good turnout and a high level of competition, this year 8 junior teams entered and 11 senior teams. The clubs being represented were Cropthorne, West Oxfordshire, Bromyard, Evenlode, Frampton, Malvern, Cheltenham, Worcester & Leadon Vale.

The Juniors

The juniors were first to compete, the course was well built as usual and asked some questions. The juniors all jumped really well in the first round, although there were a few with a couple of time faults. The first round ended with Cropthorne Red, Cropthorne Blue and Bromyard going in to round two with zero faults.

Round two was fast and furious with everything still to play for. Bromyard started off jumping really well and fast, they finished on a score of zero, which meant only the two Cropthorne teams could beat them. The Cropthorne Red were mid way through the class and they too ended with zero faults but were just not quite as quick as Bromyard, the pressure was on for the Cropthorne Blue team.

Bromyard were eagerly watching the Cropthorne Blue team as they went in, the first horse in unfortunately rolled a pole and so did their second team member, so although their 3rd & 4th team members did go clear it meant Bromyard had clinched it, the thrilled junior team consisting of Rebecca Wild riding Colours of

In the afternoon it was the seniors turn, the first team to compete were the Worcester Warriors, their first team member set the standard with a lovely clear, but unfortunately the rest of the team didn’t find it as easy, with the team finishing on 8 faults. As the first round went on there were a lot of time penalties being had so the seniors really had to push on a bit more to make the time. At the end of the first round it was only the Frampton Twirls on zero faults and only 16 competitors went clear. This put the pressure on the Frampton Twirls team, if they could just go clear in the second round! a nervous time as they were the penultimate team to jump.

The course was again changed and raised for the second round, most seniors in the second round were just aiming for a clear, although there were a few trying to make a good time, hoping to bring their teams up the leader board, the Cheltenham Panthers had finished on 1 time penalty after the first round, so needed to go clear to put the pressure on Frampton.

Unfortunately the

score of 17 faults. Shortly after was the Frampton Twirls who could spare one pole down and still beat the Malvern Maddams, who also had their eye on the winning spot after finishing their first round on 7 faults, their first rider rode a lovely clear round but again their second and third riders had a unlucky pole down each. The forth rider finished on 12 faults meaning their team finished on a score of 8, which brought a sigh of relief to the Malvern Maddams who were next in and could potentially take the top spot if they leave all the poles up! But again the second round brought an unlucky pole down for 3 of their riders finishing on a score of 15 faults.

This meant the Frampton Twirls had done it, the team consisting of Gill Spencer riding Lottie Freenie, Jo Knapman riding Danes Court, Kelly Clack riding Winton and Amanda Blewett riding Flamenco Dancer had won the senior section and qualified for the National Championships in March 2013.

A very pleased Paula Newman team manager for Frampton Riding Club said “A fantastic result for FFRC! The girls have all worked really hard this summer and it’s great to see their hard work paying off. This was Gill Spencer’s first competition so she is delighted with her double clear, Jo Knapman has been competing for the club at Mercian level this summer, so this was a step us for her, Kelly Clack was drafted in at the last minute and as usual stepped up to the challenge! Amanda Blewett was really pleased with her mare that has only competed lightly this year. I am really proud of them all and we are really excited to be going to the Championships at Hartpury!’
