HOYS Locals in the Show Jumping

The Southern riders were certainly on form in the show jumping at Horse of the Year Show especially Gloucestershire’s Rosie Hegarty who was runner up in the Blue Chip Junior Newcomers Championship.

Rosie was riding the ten year old pony Minson and was 2.13 secs behind the winner Jodie Crawford in the eight pony jump off. Minison bred by Gillen Davies from Glamorgan and is by Geoff Glazzard’s former top show jumping stallion Its The Business and out of the lovely mare Miniature Quickstep, the latter now 27, was ridden by Gillian’s son Andrew which won the Young Riders Championship at Wembley in 1993. Minison just had a fence down in the Squibb Demolition Pony Foxhunter Final. Rosie also was seventh in the Blue Chip feed Balancer Pony Newcomers final riding the eight year old skewbald gelding Another Twisted; both ponies are owned by Jill Blackwell and qualified at Crofton Manor.

Dorset rider Tegan Jones riding the eight year old Connemara gelding Robe Duster by Earlson finished fifth in the eleven pony jump off of the Squibb Demolition Pony Foxhunter and qualified at the Hand Equestrian. Romilly Simmons from Somerset put in a good challenge by finishing eighth in the junior newcomers riding the ten year old Irish Sports Horse

pony Magnetoes Dream and had two fences down with her other pony Lahinch Katie, the latter had three fences down in the junior foxhunter.

Joshua Hutchins from North Cornwall had to wait quite a long time before he could jump Charlie XIII in the Squibb Demolition Pony Foxhunter as there had been a problem in the collecting ring and the Andrew Bowen International arena was brought to a halt whilst organizers behind the scenes rushed to get everything in order. When the lights were brought back up, Josh came forward to a cheer from the crowd he and Charlie jumped so much better than they did last year and it was unfortunate that two poles came down leaving them on eight faults. Josh also rode in the Blue Chip Pony Newcomers drawn last to go on Jennifer Hudson’s seven year old coloured pony My Time IV sadly they too had faults finishing mid field. It is a great achievement for these junior riders to qualify for HOYS having to travel far afield to qualify I am sure we will see more of Josh in the future.

Sammy Jo Coffin from St Austell in Cornwall competed in the Addington Manor Talent Spotters incorporating the seven year old

championship and finished seventh. Sammy Jo was riding Philip Luker’s eight year old Danish Warmblood stallion Zig Zag bred by Alison Merllweath from The Solland Stud and just had a fence down in the jump off in a time of 39.31 secs. Sammy Jo received a £120 first prize and qualified at the Hand Equestrian Centre and is a well known competitor on the circuit.

Clevedon based Anna Edwards jumped her own seven year old bay gelding Blazer B to one of seven

first round clears in of the Equestrian Clearance.com Newcomers collecting an unfortunate four faults in the jump off finishing in 47.14 seconds what was a good enough time to take third place had the fence stayed up. The fastest of the four faulters Anna collected fifth place. The same combination jumped on the Saturday in the 6 year old National Championship, again getting into the jump off with a great time, but sadly the poles came down to leave her just out of the places.

Phillip Miller rode Di and Penny Cornish’ nine year old Bay gelding Basic in the Equestrian Clearance. com Newcomers getting through to the jump off giving Anna a run for her money, sadly Basic too had a pole and had to settle for sixth place. Philip also rode Very Versace for Di and Penny in the Grandstand Welcome Stakes speed class finishing in sixth place on the Thursday.
