The Horse of the Year Show took place in the LG Arena, The NEC Birmingham from 3rd-7th October with plenty of challenge from the Southern riders.


The first day was the TopSpec Ridden Hunters which produced a good win by Clare Oliver riding Mrs Bernie White’s ten year old gelding Loughkeen Dancing Lord by Crosstown Dancer which took the heavyweight section and qualified at Royal Cornwall. Lorraine Homer (Nee Tatlow) was runner up in the heavyweight riding Alan and Isabel Hall’s prolific winner Major Mowlow, a seven year old by Ronabo out of Moylow Ginger which qualified at Bramham and also did well at the Great Yorkshire while Richard Ramsay rode Lorraine’s six year old Cashel Rock.


The NPS Baileys Ridden Mountain and Moorland Championship judged by Barbara Evans and Gillian Sells produced an excellent win by Buckinghamshire’s Frazer Atherden riding the ten year old Highland stallion Stirlingdene by


Fyfedene bred by Scott McGregor who is now in Australia. Frazer won the £500 Mountain & Moorland Supreme Championship under judge Sheila Clark and was presented with the trophy by HRH Princess Royal, patron of The National Pony Society. Frazer was absolutely delighted to clinch the prize on his final ride under saddle the combination have also been former Olympia finalists and will be concentrating on in hand classes next season. To make their week complete Frazer and Stirlingdene clinched the Overall Supreme Pony of the Year title on the last night of the show, where a few more tears of joy were shed.


Suffolk based Sofia Vaughan was runner up in the Dartmoor, Exmoor and Shetland section riding the 12year old stallion Moortown Honeyman by


Hisley Craftsman bred by Diane and John Jordan from Devon who qualified at Ponies UK. Jessica Please from Rockbeare, Near Exeter produced an excellent third place riding the eleven year old gelding Tawbitts Mystic Major by Tawbitts Xocet bred by Gill Langdon bred on the Slopes of Dunkery and owned by Gill, Jackie Ablett and 50% share by Hilary Williams. Jessica who is aiming for a place at Olympia won four classes and qualified at the NPS Summer Championships.


Jenna Payne from Cornwall was over the moon to ride her eight year old Exmoor Stallion Dunkery Tawny Owl. “I qualified at the Exmoor Breed show on 8th August in Exford on top of blustery hill where we stood Supreme of show. It’s an absolute honour to represent the Exmoor’s here at HOYS” said Jenna, who has owned the Stallion since he was 4 years old and produced him herself from her home in St Day.


David Hodge and Julian Walters from Okehampton bred the Shetland ponies Blackertor Rhonda and Sharptor Laser Red ridden by Elizabeth Evans and Alice Barr that finished fifth and seventh. Elizabeth Newbolt-Young and daughters bred the Dartmoors Shilstone Rocks North Westerley and Snowy Mountain ridden by Chloe Chubb from Kent and Freddie Thompson from Salcombe that were sixth and eighth.


Molly Simpson, from Exeter who finished second last year rode Wendy Bridges’ homebred Highland mare Holmedown Chicargo aka Hilda to ninth place in the very strong Highland class.


Sam Roberts based in Hampshire qualified twelve ponies, won the New Forest


and Connemara with her own Banks Vanila and had a good third in the Welsh B riding the seven year old stallion Millcroft Iska Roc by former HOYS finalist Millcroft Ghost owned and bred by Maggie and John Carter from Dawlish. Alexandra Bates won the Welsh B section on Cotterell Leonardo who Sam used to ride, the seven year has been based with Alexandra in Northamptonshire. Millcroft Iska Roc also won the working hunter section exceeding 122cm and also champion in the Burghley Eventing Pony Champions last month and was runner up in the ridden last year. Lucy Davey based at Alphingrton rode Joyce and Jacky Newbery’s six year old Eyarth Osprey which qualified at the Welsh Championships.


Tarnya Shield from Abergavenney won the Welsh C section riding Rachel Bright’s 14 year-old stallion Waxwing Rheel by Wyken Rob Roy bred by David Blair and Tom Best from Scotland and qualified at NPS Area 5 Bold Heath. Rob Roy was also the sire of Heather and Anne Abrahall’s Wyken Romeo and Wyken Lady Jasmine. Lowrie Reed had a worthwhile journey from Aberswyth winning the Welsh Section D and took the reserve champion riding the nine year old mare Nebo Julie Ann by Blaengwan Bren bred in South Wales by Mary Geraint and Owen Jones from The Nebo Stud which qualified at Three Counties and also was champion at Royal Welsh.


Jane Wyatt from Wiltshire put in a good performance to finish third with the six year old stallion Llanarth Seldom Seen by Menai Sparking Magic bred by Anne and Len Bigley from Herefordshire and took the final qualifier at Moreton In The Marsh.

The Brineton/Colne Mini Mountain & Moorland Championship went to Kashia Marie Bhogal riding Springwater Legato who took the lead rein section. Reserve Champion going to eleven year old Ellie Williams on Horninglow Derwent who won the first ridden. Ellie had already had a good practice in the Caldene arena the previous day as she also qualified the seven year old Shetland for the open section, winning at Ponies UK in a strong class of 39 at her very first attempt in open classes. Ellie’s other pony, Delami Verdi produced by Tracey Millward finished in ninth place with a replacement jockey.


Runner up in the lead rein was Joyce and Jacky Newbery’s five year old Newoak Designer Edition by Newoak Prosper out of Newoak first Edition, and a grandson of foundation mare Whitewillows Bewitching, beautifully ridden by five year old Millie Lockhart and led by elder sister Kirsty who was last at HOYS in 2000 riding Hisley Connoiseur. Millie in first season was absolutely delighted in her first major indoor, having taken supreme at the Dartmoor Breed Championships and qualified at Monmouth Show.


Julie Templeton led last year’s champion seven year old Newoak Balladier by Hisley Cravat out of Jurston Parke Eliza ridden by Victoria McDowell who was fifth behind Charlie Parker- King riding Dunnabridge (W) Woodcock bred by Mr & Mrs Roger Windsor in the Dartmoor Hills.


Alexia Trodd-Bohin from Bristol riding the eight year old Welsh B gelding Gigman Pizazz by Gigman Serenade was third in the Brineton First Ridden and qualified at New Forest & Hampshire Show.
