SPN AUG 2012 Refurbs&Renovations
persuade pool owners that the recent advancement of
technology makes renovations well worthwhile. Pool owners can now transform an old, troublesome pool into a luxury swimming pool, with every possible amenity, that runs smoother and cheaper than it ever did.
One pool builder told us: “Unfortunately, many people settle for their existing pool because they do not receive adequate information regarding the possibilities of a pool renovation. Maybe they simply underestimate the possibilities of renovating an existing pool.”
Pool builders claim the best options when it comes to renovations to get the pool looking good and saving costs include:

POOL SURROUNDS DECKED OUT IN NATURAL STONE Renewing stone coping and patios bring style and a new look. Depending on the style of the swimming pool, various natural stones can complete the look with natural or formal tones. Taking renovation one step further and landscaping to complement your swimming area adds a stylistic punch in your renovation.
WATER FEATURES MORE POPULAR
The addition of cascading waterfalls and elegant fountains are becoming a more popular. Fountains can be anything from splashing from a stone statue to intermittent squirts for a fun touch. Waterfalls can be built to flow from a pool into a larger one, or they can trickle down a stone and pebble landscape into it.
BETTER LIGHTING AND REDUCED COSTS
Lights can be placed in your water features and recessed along the outside. Special lighting can change colours and intensity. It’s easy to see that no restoration is complete without the addition of a spectacular lighting system.
SALT WATER CHLORINATORS
Salt water chlorinators represent a new wave in swimming pool service technology. Salt water chlorinators remove the need for liquid chlorine, granular chlorine, or chlorine tablets. The key here is convenience. Salt water chlorinators eliminate the storage and manual application of chlorine. When
chlorine is needed, salt is converted into chlorine through a simple chemical process, the same process that is used to create these other chlorine additives. Overall, a renovation that includes a salt water chlorinator cuts down on the hassle of adding and monitoring chlorine.
NEW LINERS DO THE TRICK You can also renovate a pool without adding anything on the exterior. Adding a brand new liner to the pool can change the entire look. The variety of styles and colours with materials can transform the pool’s appearance into something like a lagoon. Installing new tiling to the pool can make a dramatic or even startling change. spn
HERTFORDSHIRE POOL RENOVATION GO AHEAD – BETTER LATE THAN NEVER!
After five years of deliberation, the owner of this derelict pool building had had enough! He made the decision to pull it all down and erect in its place a new Endless Summer telescopic enclosure. Coupled with the renovation of the pool, it has proved an excellent double decision with the enclosure providing an all year round leisure facility. To renovate or start from scratch? That was the question the Bell family of Bourne End faced when they looked at the eyesore of a dilapidated pool and spa building which had long since seen better days. Bucks
Swimming Pools of Beaconsfield who had quoted for the job some five years before finally got the call to help.
Steve Bowden of Bucks Swimming Pools says: “The pool and spa had fallen into complete disrepair with weeds and even a tree growing through the winter cover. The building could have been renovated but the cost proved to be almost equal to installing a new building so the decision was made easy. “We looked at the various options in the marketplace as the customer was keen to extend the swimming season but the Endless Summer won thanks to its versatility,” adds Steve.
The Bells chose a central opening enclosure for maximum flexibility and a green coloured finish to blend into the surroundings. The neighbours, who expressed concern about the new enclosure impinging on their view, were delighted with the finished article and despite its 15.5m length and 8.5m width and 3m height it is a lot less obtrusive than the previous construction.
“It’s always a pleasure to open the door and enter a warm, wind-free environment,” says Simon Bell. “The pool is always clean and we have seen major savings in chemicals and fuel.” Certikin’s Endless Summer
telescopic enclosures have for a long time been the answer to the changeable British climate. Now, with new 2012 designs there are more options. This year for example sees the launch of a trackless model that takes the custom- built telescopic enclosures to a new level of versatility. Certikin includes a site survey service to ensure all needs and requirements are met in their bespoke manufacturing process.
