s news that all the hosepipe bans have now been lifted, please note that the BSPF still does not underestimate the difficulties being
faced by the industry.
Dialogue continues with Water UK and the water companies to get a better understanding of how our industry can demonstrate its water efficiency and make further improvements, so that our businesses can continue to work effectively when domestic customers have their water use restricted.
This is especially important as the water companies were prepared to allow some businesses such as window cleaners and hand car washes to be initially exempted during the ban. The whole industry and not just some companies needs to continue to meet the challenge of demonstrating water efficiency and to be proactive in finding ways of minimising water usage. The BSPF will be working with SPATA and BISHTA to develop a Code of Practice and information has already been shared from other countries, such as America, to learn how they are approaching this issue. The key principles that we need to reflect include: • the finished pool should ideally be water tight and so water cannot leak through the shell;
• there should be reduced evaporation once a cover is fitted;
• backwash procedures should remain effective (but ideally products and methods should be used to limit the amount of water lost in this process;
• as much of the pool water should be held in temporary structures, if repairs are being carried out;
• the pools should be metered so that water usage is charged for.
Additionally, the pool design may become more relevant to clarify if the water volume requested is actually necessary. So long as diving is not a requirement, reducing the depth of the pool can have a big impact on the overall water volume and hence will save water.
With new builds, the need for rainwater harvesting tanks may become the norm, even if the water is not used for the pool itself, but for
other things such as the garden and/or cleaning windows, etc.
It is important for the whole industry to understand that the water companies continue to set targets to reduce water leaks and we must work at becoming more water efficient. We must continue to demonstrate how our industry takes water efficiency very seriously and work with our customers to educate them on the benefits of installing covers, etc, to reduce evaporation losses.
Exhibitions continue to be a major medium for promoting our industry to consumers and the trade. SPATA recently attended Grand Designs Live and with the support of Cresta Leisure, EPS, London Swimming Pool Company, Origin Leisure, Portrait Pools and Tanby Pools, they advised visitors about the services offered by themselves and their fellow members. The costs and staffing were shared amongst the attendees making the experience more appealing than spending nine days solid on the stand!
Hydropool (BISHTA members) were not only at Grand Designs Live, but also at The Ideal Home Show and The Boat Show. A large number of companies (many of them BISHTA members) are currently exhibiting at regional and county shows, as they understand the relevance of getting their products in front of their potential audience. It is vital that any company exhibiting maintains their professionalism at all times. BISHTA has been alerted to some isolated incidents where the pressure to make a sale has led to companies making false statements about the quality and/or reliability of their competitors’ products and this can be damaging for the reputation of the industry. Where the claims are true, this needs to be handled very carefully and BISHTA would like to be informed about such incidents.
It has been heartening to receive feedback from companies that either want to find out more about membership, or have some constructive comments for the industry to address. The more feedback there is from the whole industry, the better this will be as we continue to work on behalf of the industry with discussions at national and international level, on topics that affect us all. spn
