Aquaflex lining shows how faded pool steps can be speedily and effectively given a new look
Tilebands are quadruple coated with lacquer to help prevent waterline staining and the material is ‘impregnated’ with algaecide and comes with a five year pro rata warranty.
Plastica’s ‘Extreme’ on site lining continues to buck the trend. Amid the doom and gloom of the economy, the hosepipe bans and the dismal UK weather conspiring against the pool industry, the demand for quality on site lining has grown to the extent that Plastica have had to add another team to meet the pool trade’s demands. Since introducing the system into the UK in 1988 Plastica have installed the system into over 2,000 commercial and domestic pools. Plastica’s installers have many years of experience with their senior fitter installing on the first project to be completed, way back in 1988.
The professional expertise and friendliness of Plastica people is a reflection of the company’s commitment to customer satisfaction. When a customer needs a complicated, tailor made pool lining designed by the technical staff Plastica people will respond with specialist knowledge and helpful advice.

AQUAFLEX FLEXIBILITY
Another home-grown and longstanding liner manufacturer is Aquaflex who are known for their fastidiousness in manufacturing their range of products and constantly produce high quality, well fitted, tailor made in-ground and above- ground vinyl liners for professional pool companies throughout the UK.
The Aquaflex policy has always been one of attention and their business has achieved success by making sure that the quality of both the materials used and the manufacturing process is second to none. Aquaflex have steadily increased their range of colours for tile bands and liners and offer good choices in both plain and patterned liners. Neil Dalziel is joint Managing Director at
Aquaflex and has seen many developments in liner manufacturing over the years saying: “Thirty or 40 years ago the options were very limited – two plain colours (Blue and Aqua) and two patterns (Mosaic and Marble). Kits imported from North America (Fox, Cascade, Kafko etc.) tended to have their own unique patterns which were fairly unsophisticated by today’s standards.” Other trends that Aquaflex have developed over the years include liner lock fixing by means of a bead around the top of the liner. Previously many liners (especially of North American origin) were made with an overlap fixing – which made it more difficult to achieve a good fit. Motifs and logos, pioneered by Aquaflex, have become more common over the last 20 years or so. Aquaflex also pioneered the incorporation of integral lined steps into pre tailored liners. These offer enormous cost benefits over glass reinforced plastic (GRP) or acrylic step units as well as enabling continuity of pattern over the entire pool.
Neil adds: “The most significant trend in liner
pools in recent years has been the tendency towards site lined pools. Rather than having a factory made one-piece liner, this system requires expertly trained engineers to line the pool on site (a bit like wallpapering). Using much thicker (1.5mm) Alkorplan material which is also strengthened with a reinforcing scrim to improve dimensional stability, this system is more expensive than the traditional ‘bag’ liner but has significant benefits in terms of longevity and resistance to chemical and physical attack. There is no sign of this trend towards site lined pools abating any time soon.”
On site lining with Alkorplan has grown in coverage and stature in recent years. Once used mainly in commercial pools the strength, flexibility and longevity of the material means that it is now widely used in pool renovation and also domestic swimming pools. The material is top-quality and with over 200 million m2 installed, Alkorplan membranes are the best waterproofing solution, ranging from civil engineering, roofing, and of course pools. With a significant
Aquaflex on site Alkorplan lining can cope with any obstacle within the pool
