best mean reduced opening hours and the inability to upgrade pool systems and services. Larger pools throughout the UK whether local authority owned, leisure clubs or private operations have as one pool manager said “had about five years worth of change crammed into a few months”.

Commercial pools are looking for better maintenance systems at their swimming pools, more efficiency, more knowledgeable staff and as many ideas as they can to reduce costs. The issue restricting local authority pools is lack of money to do things alongside the need to make any investment self funding. But there are always success stories to inspire others. The Academy Leisure Centre, in Harrogate, made £55,000 annual savings through the introduction of a Calorex heat pump system. At Birmingham’s Small Heath Pool a new 2012 UV system has produced immediate savings of £15,000 a year.

Bristol Southern Pool has reduced heating costs by £35,000 after a new ventilation and heat pump heating system .

Energy efficient solutions are in the market whether to reduce general energy consumption using existing equipment or by products such as dual speed filtration pumps, heat retention pool covers, LED lights or the simple installation of time clocks on relevant equipment. The momentum for environmental and energy and cost-related effects focuses on pumps, measuring, control and dosage systems, filters and water treatment products that not only significantly

reduce energy use but also CO2 emissions. The priorities still remain:

• Lower electricity costs making more use of pumps, measuring, control and dosage costs

• Lower water usage systems that reduce use of water, treatment products and energy • Lower chlorine costs.

HEAT PUMPS STILL THE FOCUS OF ATTENTION

Heat pumps remain high on the agenda for commercial pools in the search for cost savings. The Gemini system from Heatstar is a response against the sort of high fuel prices and the escalating focus and demand for sources of renewable energy.

The Gemini provides all the usual energy efficiencies associated with a heat pump dehumidification system with heat reclaim available to both air and pool water. It incorporates a built-in fresh air source heat pump boiler, which extracts energy from the outside air and uses this to heat the pool room air and pool water directly.

The installation of a custom made Heatstar heat pump system transformed high energy bills for a 25 metre local authority pool on the Isle of Wight.

from Heatstar – designed to maximise energy recovery potential

Heatstar worked alongside the Isle of Wight Council’s energy manager, to design a bespoke heat pump to maximise energy recovery potential. During the winter months, a dehumidifying heat pump is used to remove excess moisture from the swimming pool enclosure air, thereby avoiding costly and wasteful humid air extraction to atmosphere.

The latent energy contained within the pool enclosure air is upgraded using the heat pump principle and then returned back to the pool enclosure as dry heat. If the pool enclosure air is already at set point temperature, then this energy is instead condensed into the pool water to help offset pool water heating costs.

During periods when there is solar heat gain within the enclosure, the heat pump is activated to utilise any excess heat within the air for the purpose of pool water heating.

During periods when the enclosure roof is open, the system adapts to become a fresh air to pool water heat pump.

During the night period, when a surface cover is applied on the pool, the whole system is set back to operate in stasis, with inverter driven EC fans regulating air movement through the heat pump and pool enclosure as necessary. The capital installation costs of the new Heatstar heat pump is being self funded by the operating cost saving benefits.

The Academy in Harrogate – massive savings thanks to installation of Calorex heat pumps

After six months of operation, during which time actual energy savings were actually better than predicted, the client has heaped praise upon the application and has declared that the installation of the Heatstar heat pump was the best thing they have ever undertaken. The combined Gemini hybrid provides the end client with an easy and convenient solution to the desire to accommodate renewable energy technology, without the need or high associated costs of installing a ground source heat pump
