The University of Ottawa is North America’s premier bilingual university and is one of Canada’s top 10 research universities. The LL.M. program is a joint endeavor of the two sections and builds upon each one’s unique strengths. Our specific fields of expertise are: International Law, including International Humanitarian and Security Law; Human Rights; International Trade and Foreign Investment Law; Environmental Law; Law and Technology; Law and Social Justice; Notarial Law; and Comparative Private Law.
We offer two thesis-based programs: LL.M. and Ph.D. and one course- based LL.M.C.L. specifically for students who are graduates from a civil law jurisdiction.
The ICL provides substantial opportunities for investigation and ex- change across legal traditions that move beyond the simple acknowl- edgment or contrast of formal rules in different geographical places. It encourages transdisciplinary approaches to teaching and research. The distinctive required course for all LL.M. students in the ICL is Legal Traditions.
The Master’s Specialization in Bioethics is an interdisciplinary program that emphasizes both the conceptual and practical aspects of Bioethics. The Master’s Specialization in Bioethics ordinarily takes at least two years to complete. The first year is devoted to course work, and the second year is devoted to the thesis on a topic in bioethics.
The Thesis program is suited to students who wish to focus on original scholarly research and writing under the supervision of a law professor. The Air and Space Law LL.M. with Thesis involves 20 credits in course work and 25 research credits. The Non-Thesis program is suited to students who wish to gain a wide exposure to a range of taught courses within the domain of Air and Space Law.
