Former Ukrainian Prime Minister Convicted For Abuse of Office


In October 2011, Yulia Tymoshenko, former Ukrai- nian prime minister, was sentenced to seven years in prison for abuse of office. According to Judge Rodion Kireyev, Tymoshenko exceeded her powers by signing a 2009 gas deal with Russia that led to Ukraine paying Russia a high price for gas. The ver- dict mandated Tymoshenko to pay Naftogaz, the na- tional oil and gas company of Ukraine, damages in the amount of 1.5 billion hryvnia ($188 million USD) for estimated losses. According to Judge Kireyev, Tymoshenko’s sentence was the maximum for the offense, as Judge Kireyev had found no extenuat- ing circumstances to reduce the term, and further, that Tymoshenko failed to convey any remorse for her actions.


Tymoshenko was the primary leader in Ukraine’s 2004 Orange Revolution, which overturned Viktor Yanukovych’s election victory, due to alleged fraud. However, Yanukovych then proceeded to win the next presidential election. At present, Tymoshenko is the chief opposition to current president Viktor Yanukovych. Tymoshenko believes her arrest was orchestrated by President Yanukovych and has com- pared her trial to the Stalin purges of decades past when Stalin acted politically to rid people deemed
