87 worldnews US TO HAVE ITS FIRST COUNTRY WIDE CODE OF PRACTICE

After three years of discussions and debates there is about to be one code of conduct for the pool industry throughout the United States. The Swimming Pool and Spa Code will mean for the first time that all 50 states will abide by one set of regulations for the design, installation and implementation of swimming pools and spas.

The code, which has been a key objective of the Association of Pool and Spa Professionals, will come into effect from March this year. “The code is important to the industry because it will reduce the potential for 50 individual state codes and creates one all inclusive uniform pool, spa and hot tub code that all states can use,” said Carvin DiGiovanni, APSP Senior Director.

“It’s one of the most important developments for our industry in setting the groundwork for enhancing the safety of consumers, and increasing opportunities for industry companies to expand their markets by building and working with one uniform code.”

STARLINE EXPANDS OVERPELT POOL PRODUCTION FACILITY

Dutch company Starline Pools is one of the few companies in the world to use robotised production to manufacture its one-piece swimming pools.

The company’s plant at Overpelt in neighbouring Belgium enables six one-piece Monoblock swimming pools to be manufactured simultaneously.

The plant is shortly being extended by 5,000 square metres to include the production of Roldeck automatic pool covers. The new Roldeck production line was

expected to be operational from early 2012.

The facility at Overpelt can produce various types of Monoblock pool, as well as sand filters and sanitary units. The company says it is one of the few in the world to use robotised production.

Starline Monoblock pools are usually installed all over the UK by an official dealer network. This Starline Dealer network operates within agreed territories and is supported by showroom point of sale equipment and material.

ENERGY COMPANIES OFFER POOL OWNERS SAVINGS

Energy companies in Australia are putting a lot of effort into getting swimming pool owners to cut their electricity bills. One leading supplier Energex is offering customers savings by buying variable speed pumps or connecting to a special off peak tariff. As part of Energex’s efforts to reduce peak demand they are offering pool owners a A$250 gift card for connecting their pool

pump to an off-peak tariff or installing a minimum 5-Star energy efficient pool pump. Pool pumps are amongst the most energy- hungry appliances and may cost more than A$550 per year in running costs. Minimum 5-Star energy efficient pool pumps are up to 80% more energy efficient and connecting a pool pump to an off- peak tariff could save up to 40% in running costs says the company.

The core of the code is the inclusion of all the current American National Standards Institute and APSP Pool and Spa Standards that cover the design, installation and inspection of aquatic vessels for example public swimming pools, public spas, permanently installed residential spas, above-ground/ residential swimming pools, residential in-ground swimming pools, portable spas, aquatic recreational facilities, barriers for all residential pools and spas, and suction entrapment avoidance.

The code incorporates safety provisions meeting the requirements of the Virginia Graeme Baker Act, as well as the industry best practices. “The whole country will have a federally compliant code that enhances consumer safety and saves time and money in the development and tracking of separate state codes,” said DiGiovanni.
