15 IN BRIEF ISPE EMBARKS ON THE NEXT 100

NEW QATAR TRADE SHOW FOR 2012 A new trade show has appeared on the 2012 calendar – the Qatar International Exhibition for Swimming Pools and Spas. The new event is being staged in a country where there is a dearth of swimming pools and research has shown it has one of the biggest potential growth markets in the world. It is to be held in Doha on 7 – 9 October 2012 and has already attracted interest from UK, French and Spanish specialist companies. Showcasing a complete range of pool and spa products, the event aims to capitalise on the boost in both commercial and domestic leisure-related activities following the country’s successful bid to stage the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Qatar expects to open 300 new spas in the next five years, for example, and is spending tens of billions of US dollars in upgrading its leisure infrastructure.

Organised by Heights for Exhibitions and Conferences, QPS 2012 is billed as a gateway to the “fastest and most promising economy in the Gulf”.

Forty delegates travelled to the Shrubbery Hotel in Ilminster, Somerset to attend the Institute’s 101st Seminar.

Part of the day’s theme was energy saving and efficiency. Glenn Harrison, UK Sales Director of Calorex Heat Pumps looked at ‘the move towards carbon neutrality and how swimming pools are affected’. Glenn explored how new technologies may be embraced and looked at planning and building regulations, together with other legislation that could potentially affect project planning and installation.

Richard Sharman, Area Technical Manager of Arch Chemicals looked at ‘Water and energy conservation within swimming pools’. Richard covered various ways to enhance water and energy conservation for pools, including the use of the correct chemicals, thereby reducing chemical expenditure; automatic chemical control, giving greater accuracy and efficiency; and the benefits of using variable speed devices, leading to reduced energy expenditure.

Allen Wilson presented two Richard Sharman Glenn Harrison

subjects – ‘New Guidance for the Risk Assessment of Legionella Bacteria’ covering BS 8580:2010 Water Quality. Risk Assessments for Legionella Control, and looked at how to comply. In his second presentation ‘Is Chlorine Getting a Fair Deal?’ he covered its history, its development, what forms are available and its future.

Howard Gosling gave a presentation encouraging people to ‘Read the

(New) Label; Use Proper Chemical Names; Do Not Mix Chemicals’. The Institute will be holding a Filtration Workshop on Tuesday 6 March and a Water Testing Workshop on Thursday 15 March. For more details contact the ISPE office.
