The popular and respected Newson Swimming Pools in Norfolk is getting ready to celebrate its 25th anniversary this year
“I can do better myself,” he said. So Shaun and his father Kevin made the break and set out on their own.

The wisdom of their decision is reflected in the fact that in 2012 Newson Swimming Pools, the respected East Anglian specialist pool and spa company celebrates its 25th anniversary. “It wasn’t working where we were and we gave it some thought and it seemed exactly the right thing to do.”
The origins of their business was plain and simple, servicing with the emphasis on reliability and quality.
The business in and around Norwich grew and through word of mouth expanded and became established.
“Word of mouth is still an important thing to us. Do a good job and it will get talked about and someone else will hear about it,” adds Shaun. “We were careful but it was the tail end of the good times in the late 80’s and the trade was doing well and very much on the up. We kept overheads to a minimum and ploughed everything back into the business we could because we knew it could grow into something more substantial.”
And that’s exactly what happened and now there are three divisions of the Norfolk business – pool building and construction, service and maintenance and sales through the company’s shop. “It’s a good structure to the business because it gives us some flexibility. If one part of the business is going through a slow patch then normally we have some better news in another area,” said Shaun, whose son Matt is now in the business making it a third generation family company.
“The weather is a key to what we do. If we have a good summer then there’s an almost instant reaction and sales go up and everyone cheers up.”
In 1991 Shaun joined SPATA.
“I guess initially it was to make sure we knew what was going on in the trade. Since Chris Hayes has been on board I think SPATA has really been going the right way. A lot more people are aware of what SPATA does these days and how it helps the trade. They may not always agree with what’s going on but they are aware. I think there has been a change in recent years in the style and approach within SPATA which is really appreciated.
“We value our membership a lot,” he stresses. In 2011, Newson Swimming Pools completed two big projects – an indoor deck level pool and a steam room complex. The two contracts reflect what Shaun sees as a crucial element of what they do.
“The biggest part of the market for us is still the top end where there are people in the A and B categories and even C1 who have got money. They are careful with it but they have got it and increasingly they are putting it into bricks and mortar and spending it on their homes rather than just leaving it in the bank. It is a trend we are benefitting from.”

higher profile to back up the online product sales. “Servicing and repair is still very important to us,” he adds
So now are hot tubs and this year Newson Swimming Pools took on the sale of Spa Crest hot tubs.
“It’s early days but we like working with Tony Welsby of Spa Crest Europe and I think the business will grow and we will do well. It just adds another dimension for us.” spn
