chandeliers, indirect cove lighting for general ambient lighting, wallwashing and feature lighting for general mood setting and visual interest. The downlights from FLOS use the latest warm white (2700K) Philips LED Master lamps consuming only 10 watts compared to the 50W MR16 halogen lamp that would have been used conventionally; an energy saving of no less than 80%! The decorative chandeliers have been fitted with multiple Philips 3W LED Candle lamps which traditionally would have used a conventional 15W incandescent bulb, again an energy saving of 80%. The linear cove and feature lighting includes warm white (2700K) hard-backed 14W LED strips from KKDC and flexible LED strip lights from OSRAM, both providing a 50% energy saving compared to traditional fluorescent lighting. All lights are fully dimmable and programmed to the appropriate moods and ambiance. What is more, the dimmable and timer programmed lighting controls further assure optimal usage of the lights with a minimum of energy wastage. LED technology is known for its long life span and with the application of LED lighting in this restaurant it is anticipated that maintenance (lamp replacement) has been reduced to practically zero. Compared to halogen lighting lamp life is expected to increase ten fold at normal full usage. With mood and ambiance settings reducing the actual energy consumption even further the life span of the lamps is anticipated to be many times more. Finally, and most important to any operator, will be its bottom line operation cost. While the capital investment for the LED technology has a 30 to 50% premium price compared to conventional halogen or fluorescent lighting technology, the lower monthly electricity bill and much reduced maintenance needs are expected to provide a return on investment of well less than two years. The hotel is now gearing up for the further renovation of its guestrooms and other public areas and with the success and positive acclaim achieved with the Man Fu Yuan restaurant it now has all the confidence and resolve that it can achieve its goal of making the Bugis a leader and example in the application of green lighting technologies.
